TOTUS OLTC — online monitoring of power transformer tap changers

TOTUS OLTC is an online monitoring system for the on-load tap changers of power transformers. It tracks every tap change, drive mechanics, motor current and torque, and signals wear before failure.

Parameters
tap position, number and quality of tap changes, drive motor current and profile, torque, temperature, load trends
Functions
operation history, mechanical monitoring (wear, skews), electrical analysis, comparison of tap-change torque
Integration
TOTUS platform (DGA, BM, PD, TFC), Sapient

Description

TOTUS OLTC provides continuous online monitoring of on-load voltage regulation devices of power transformers. The OLTC is the only moving part of a transformer, and over its whole service life it endures significant mechanical and electrical stress. Contact wear, loosened fastenings and overheating can end in transformer failure, fire or explosion. According to the manufacturer's estimate, OLTCs remain one of the leading causes of transformer failures.

The system brings together mechanical, electrical and operational data. Operation logging records every tap change and keeps a detailed history of operations, from which wear is assessed and anomalies are noticed. Mechanical monitoring analyses the movement of the mechanism and detects wear, misalignment and other faults. Electrical analysis covers the current tap position, the current and profile of the drive motor, and temperature. The number and quality of tap changes are kept separately, so it is visible how many operations the unit has performed between overhauls.

Torque during tap changing is measured separately. It is compared with reference data, and a deviation points to a mechanical problem or signs of thermal overstress. Such a deviation is visible before it shows up during an inspection. Load trends help explain why the behaviour of the unit has changed and distinguish a change of operating mode from a real defect. Temperature measurement completes the picture of the thermal state of the unit.

Early diagnostics moves OLTC maintenance from a schedule or emergency repair to actual condition. Repair crew resources go to the equipment with the highest risk, the service life of the unit is extended, and repair costs fall. Irreversible damage and a long transformer replacement can be avoided, and the operating risk for the substation is reduced. Repairs are planned for a convenient outage window, and not after an emergency protection trip.

TOTUS OLTC is part of the modular TOTUS platform and works together with the G1, G5 and G9 DGA monitors and with monitoring of bushings, partial discharges and through-fault currents. Data goes to the Sapient software for analysis across the whole transformer fleet. A single platform with a common interface simplifies the work of staff and lowers the total cost of ownership. Experience of use is described in the third volume of the company's case studies. For a utility this is one system per transformer instead of several separate instruments.

Questions and answers

Which OLTC parameters does TOTUS OLTC monitor?

Tap position, the number and quality of tap changes, the current and profile of the drive motor, torque and temperature.

How does the system detect mechanical faults?

It analyses the movement of the mechanism and compares the tap-change torque with a reference. In this way wear, skews and misalignment become visible.

Which TOTUS monitors is OLTC compatible with?

With the G1, G5 and G9 DGA monitors, with BM bushing monitoring, and with partial discharge and TFC through-fault current monitoring.
