TOTUS G1 — online hydrogen and moisture-in-oil sensor for large transformer fleets
TOTUS G1 is an online sensor of dissolved hydrogen and oil moisture content for large fleets of small and medium transformers. It signals developing faults and passes data to the TOTUSPro software for load capability calculation.
- Measurement
- dissolved hydrogen H2, oil moisture content
- Analytics
- hot-spot temperature, overload capability, moisture in paper insulation, dielectric strength of oil
- Software
- TOTUSPro (real-time diagnostic algorithms)
- Scalability

Description
TOTUS G1 covers the large fleet of small and medium power and distribution transformers, where a multi-gas DGA monitor on every unit does not pay off. The device continuously measures hydrogen dissolved in the oil and moisture content. Hydrogen is released in almost all internal faults, from partial discharges and overheating to arcing, so its growth is an early universal sign of a fault. A single-gas profile does not replace full DGA, but it gives the signal after which the transformer is put under closer control.
Moisture is monitored around the clock, because wetting lowers the dielectric strength of the oil and accelerates ageing of the paper insulation. The degree of wetting is visible over time, not from a one-off laboratory sample. An alarm about a developing fault arrives before it turns into a failure with a long repair. In this way a utility moves from emergency repair to condition-based maintenance and plans outages in advance.
The data is processed by the TOTUSPro software with real-time diagnostic algorithms. The TOTUS analytical models (thermal, moisture, load, insulation ageing) use the measured values to estimate what cannot be measured directly. These are the winding hot-spot temperature, permissible overload, moisture in the paper insulation and the breakdown voltage of the oil. For operating staff these calculations become the basis for load management and the maintenance schedule. The models run continuously, so the estimates are updated with every new hydrogen and moisture measurement.
The manufacturer relies on simple deployment. Installation and commissioning are short, the outage of the transformer for installation is minimal, and a large fleet is covered by monitoring without exceeding the investment budget. If a site becomes more critical, G1 is supplemented with modules for monitoring bushings, partial discharges and through-fault currents, or replaced with the multi-gas TOTUS G5 or G9 within the same platform. A common platform means common software and the same approach to alarms for the whole fleet, from small distribution units to critical transformers.
Typical customers of G1 are utilities, wind and solar farm substations, and industrial enterprises. G1 data can be loaded into the Sapient Asset Insights platform together with other sources to assess the condition of the entire fleet. Examples of TOTUS monitors in operation are collected in the company's case study volumes. For service teams it is convenient that G1, G5 and G9 are maintained by the same logic.

Questions and answers
What does TOTUS G1 measure?
Hydrogen H2 dissolved in the oil and the moisture content of the oil. The remaining parameters, including the hot-spot temperature, are calculated by analytical models.
Which transformers is G1 suitable for?
For the large fleet of small and medium transformers, where a multi-gas monitor does not pay off. It is installed by utilities, wind and solar farm substations, and industry.
Can G1 be extended without replacing the platform?
Yes, modules for BM bushings, PD partial discharges and TFC through-fault currents are added to it. If needed, G1 is replaced with TOTUS G5 or G9 within the same platform.
