SWGM — online monitor for MV switchgear, 1–6 bays
SWGM (Switchgear Monitor) is a continuous online monitoring system for MV switchgear and circuit breakers. One monitor serves up to six bays and records high-frequency oscillograms of the trip and close coil currents for each. The device is designed for the move from periodic maintenance to condition-based maintenance.
- Bays monitored
- 1–6 per monitor
- Power supply
- 110–240 V AC (50–60 Hz), 110–250 V DC
- Operating temperature
- from −40 to 70 °C
- Protocols
- DNP3, Modbus, IEC 61850

Description
For each bay the monitor determines the opening, closing, arcing and full-opening times, and separately counts starts, current and running time of the drive motors. All of this is done by a single device, without separate recorders in each bay. During each operation the Smart Capture function diagnoses the mechanical and electrical parts of the breaker and automatically overlays the oscillogram on the reference record. Deviations in the curves point staff to the cause of deterioration of the mechanism, whether the latch and bearings, lubrication, auxiliary contacts or short-circuit current, so the fault can be fixed before failure.
Multi-parameter sensors measure density, temperature and humidity of SF6 or dry air. The monitor alarms on leak rate, forecasts time to lockout and keeps a record of total gas loss. Trip coil integrity is monitored through circuit resistance, and the accumulated I²t integral allows interrupter maintenance to be planned as needed rather than on a calendar schedule. Current and voltage of cabinet heaters, ambient temperature, cabinet and SF6 gas are measured separately.
The monitor is equipped only with the modules required at a specific site. When ordering, the number of bays and the set of serial ports are chosen, with one RS-485 port reserved for sensors. Next, the switchgear type is defined: air-insulated, or gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) with two to seven gas systems (busbars plus bays), including the variant with double-insulated busbars and six GIS bays. The number of trip coils to be monitored is from one to six, and cabinet heater monitoring is ordered as a separate option.
Power supply 110–240 V AC 50–60 Hz or 110–250 V DC, operating temperature from −40 to 70 °C. Communication via DNP, Modbus or IEC 61850 over copper and optical Ethernet, optionally an optical serial port, RS-485 and RS-232. Together with the SCM partial discharge monitor, the system monitors PD in busbars and switchgear feeders, which helps locate defective connections. Online monitoring reduces the number of scheduled interventions, while each intervention in the equipment itself carries a risk of new problems. Therefore monitor data is used to plan condition-based maintenance of the bays.

Questions and answers
How many switchgear bays does one SWGM monitor?
From 1 to 6 bays. For each, the oscillograms of trip and close coil currents are recorded, and the opening, closing, arcing and full-opening times are determined.
Is the SWGM suitable for gas-insulated switchgear?
Yes, the monitor is ordered for air-insulated switchgear or for GIS with 2 to 7 gas systems. The sensors measure SF6 density, temperature and humidity and alarm on leaks.
What power supply and protocols does the SWGM have?
Power supply 110–240 V AC or 110–250 V DC. Protocols DNP3, Modbus and IEC 61850 over copper and optical Ethernet, with RS-485, RS-232 and an optical serial port as options.
