SE-604 / FBR — fibre optic winding temperature measurement modules for transformers
SE-604 and FBR modules measure the winding temperature of power transformers directly, with fibre optic probes. SE-604 has 4 channels and a range from −30 to +200 °C, while FBR-AA-F6 is produced for 4, 8 or 12 channels and measures from −40 to +225 °C. The modules usually operate as part of E3 or C50 monitors.

Description
Fibre optic modules are used at critical facilities, including large autotransformers, generator step-up transformers, mobile and other critical transformers. The modules are produced for two types of probes: ceramic phosphor and semiconductor based on gallium arsenide. They are usually supplied as a kit with E3 or C50 transformer monitors, which automatically compare the temperatures measured in real time with the thermal model calculation.
The SE-604 module works on a patented fluoro-optic technology. A heat-sensitive phosphor is fixed at the end of the optical fibre and fluoresces under light pulses. Electronics based on a digital signal processor measures the decay time of the fluorescence after each pulse, and this time is unambiguously related to the sensor temperature. The module has four channels, a width of 50.8 mm, a measuring range from −30 to +200 °C, accuracy without calibration of ±2 °C, a serial RS-232 output, and is rated for an ambient temperature from 10 to 50 °C.
The FBR series modules are designed for GaAs-based probes. The measuring principle is based on absorption and transmission of white light by the semiconductor, whose transmission spectrum shifts as the temperature changes. The FBR-AA-F6 module for 62.5 µm probes is produced for 4, 8 or 12 channels, has a width of 76.2 mm, a range from −40 to +225 °C, accuracy of ±1 °C and an RS-485 output, and operates at ambient temperatures from −20 to 70 °C.
Rugged optical fibre probes for windings are supplied for both systems, 4, 8 or 10 m long, together with single-core and four-core extensions 5–20 m long, wall bushings for the tank, welded plates and welded boxes for 4, 8 or 12 probes. As part of the E3, the module makes it possible to collect accurate data on the hottest-spot temperature of the winding and refine its model, which is then carried over to other transformers as a thermal twin, spreading the accuracy of fibre optic measurement to several units at minimal cost. Single-core and four-core extensions allow the module to be moved the required distance from the tank, and probes with welded boxes are gathered at a single bushing point.

Questions and answers
Which probes do the SE-604 and FBR modules support?
The SE-604 works with ceramic phosphor probes, and the FBR-AA-F6 works with GaAs-based probes of 62.5 µm. The probe type determines the choice of module.
What is the measuring range and accuracy of the temperature?
SE-604 measures from −30 to +200 °C with accuracy of ±2 °C without calibration. FBR-AA-F6 measures from −40 to +225 °C with accuracy of ±1 °C.
What length are the probes and extensions, and how many probes can be connected?
Probes are supplied 4, 8 or 10 m long, and extensions 5–20 m long. The welded boxes take 4, 8 or 12 probes.
