Description
RGC 7 is a family of process gas chromatographs for determining gas quality, approved under the German metrology law MessEG. The chromatograph analyzes the composition of natural gas with a hydrogen admixture or purified biogas and determines up to 14 main components in mole fractions, and it also assesses hydrogen purity. From the composition it calculates the gross and net calorific value, density at standard conditions, relative density and Wobbe index according to ISO 6976 or GPA 2172-09. The growing share of renewable sources causes gas quality in networks to fluctuate and requires additional measurement of hydrogen and oxygen. RGC 7 combines the analysis of natural gas, hydrogen and oxygen in one device for applications that require approvals for custody transfer.
The basis is microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) technology. The components are separated in capillary columns and pass in sequence through a thermal conductivity detector. The carrier gas flows continuously through the miniature column and detector block, a fixed dose of sample is injected into it, and the device is regularly calibrated automatically with a gas mixture of known composition. The measuring unit has three column modules: UBNDXP for CH4, CO2 and C2H6, PDMS for hydrocarbons from propane to C6+, and molecular sieve MS5A for He, H2, O2 and N2. Accuracy for calorific value and density is ±0.15 %, and PTB has approved the chromatograph for custody transfer of calorific value, density and gas composition.
There are two versions. RGC 704 works with two carrier gases (helium and argon) and measures hydrogen up to 20 %; its gross calorific value range is 5.53–14.00 kWh/m³ and its density range 0.59–1.36 kg/m³. RGC 717 works with one carrier gas and is intended for analyzing high-purity hydrogen during its production, storage and use. The delivery includes a measuring unit, an analytical computer with a touch graphic interface, a sampler, a pressure reducer and a gas supply unit.
Additional sensors (room temperature, dew point) are connected to the computer, common alarm signals of the reducer and gas supply unit are generated, and operation with several DSfG addresses is supported. The interfaces are DSfG (up to two buses) and Modbus. The explosion protection marking is II 2G Ex db eb IIB+H2 T4 Gb, and IECEx is available. The chromatograph is installed in temperature-controlled rooms, from −20 to +60 °C (with metrological characteristics in the range −20…+55 °C). It is used in custody transfer metering, for determining K, for controlling gas blenders, in Power-to-Gas, and in transmission and regional networks.
