PCS-996 / PCS-997S phasor measurement units (PMU), PDC concentrators and travelling-wave fault locators
The PCS-996 covers a synchronized phasor measurement system for wide-area monitoring of transient processes (WAMS). PMU devices are installed at substations and power plants, and PDC concentrators collect their data and pass it to the control center, where dynamic stability is assessed and low-frequency oscillations are detected. The PCS-997S locates faults on high-voltage AC overhead lines by the travelling-wave method.

Description
The PCS-996 PMU measures voltage and current phasors synchronized by satellite time and records dynamic processes of the power system. The device calculates phasor magnitudes and phase angles (phase voltages and currents, positive sequence, generator EMF), active and reactive power, frequency and its rate of change. It monitors binary signals, including disconnector positions, protection operations and power system stabilizer operation, and sends data to a PDC or a WAMS center over the IEEE C37.118 protocol. Without an external precise time signal the device holds the time count from its own clock for a period. The hardware is built on the multiprocessor UAPC platform, and the protocols comply with IEEE C37.118-2005 and C37.118.2-2011.
The built-in recording is triggered by electrical quantities or binary inputs and stores up to 1024 fault reports and waveforms in COMTRADE format. The log additionally contains 1024 records each of input and output changes, alarms and service events. The PCS-996A version is intended for substations and records phasors of busbars, lines and transformers. The PCS-996B is installed at power plants and records generator parameters, including internal EMF and power angle, as well as 4–20 mA signals, for example excitation voltage and current or rotational speed.
The PCS-996G concentrator and the new PCS-996S-G receive PMU data over optical links, align it by time stamps, store it locally and pass it to a higher-level PDC or a control center. The PDC has at least four independent channels to control centers, and a 128 GB disk can be installed for the archive.
The PCS-997S records the current wave that appears during a short circuit and exchanges data with the device at the opposite end of the line over Ethernet or a dedicated fiber. A traveling-wave sampling rate of 2 MHz gives a resolution of up to 75 m. One-ended and two-ended methods are supported, so patrol crews do not have to search long for the fault. The devices have two RJ45 ports and two optical Ethernet ports with IEC 61850 and IEC 60870-5-103 protocols, FTP access to archives and time synchronization over RS-485. They are used in transmission and distribution networks, at power plants and in renewable energy output schemes.

Questions and answers
Which protocol does the PCS-996 use to send synchrophasors?
IEEE C37.118, to a PDC concentrator or a WAMS center. For communication with the process control system there are IEC 61850 and IEC 60870-5-103.
What fault location accuracy does the PCS-997S provide?
A traveling-wave sampling rate of 2 MHz gives a resolution of up to 75 m. The device works with one-ended and two-ended methods.
How do the PCS-996A and PCS-996B versions differ?
The PCS-996A is intended for substations and records phasors of busbars, lines and transformers. The PCS-996B is installed at power plants to record the internal EMF and power angle of the generator.
