Optocon TS2P / TS3 / TS4 / TS5 / TST, fiber-optic temperature sensors based on GaAs
Optocon TS2P, TS3, TS4, TS5 and TST are fiber-optic temperature sensors with a gallium arsenide crystal on the fiber tip, for use with FOTEMP instruments. The continuous range is from −200 to +260 °C with an accuracy of ±0.2 K, and the sensors are fully dielectric and fitted on live parts at high voltage.

Description
The sensing element is a GaAs crystal at the end of the optical fiber. The transmission spectrum of the crystal shifts with temperature, and the FOTEMP instrument determines the temperature from the position of the absorption edge. The sensor contains no metal, so electromagnetic and radio-frequency interference and microwave radiation do not affect the reading. A resistance thermometer or thermocouple cannot be placed on a conductor at high voltage, while an optical probe is fitted directly on live parts.
The series has five types. The TS2P is the smallest, with an open 300 × 300 µm crystal for direct contact with very small surfaces and maximum response speed, and is used for semiconductors and micro test tubes. The TS3 is universal, with a semi-rigid adjustable probe for RF environments, high-voltage installations and testing. The TS4 in a PTFE sheath is corrosion resistant, accurate and suitable for chemically aggressive environments and immersion in liquids. The TS5 has a small form factor for medicine and catheter equipment.
The TST is made specifically for oil-filled and dry transformers. The design has no air inclusions, and the sensor is placed in the windings during manufacture, fitted on busbars and in switchgear, optionally with Nomex® J-Spacer or Disk-Spacer pads. This way the temperature of the hottest point of the winding is measured directly. Calibration of the sensors together with FOTEMP instruments is possible over the range from −200 to +300 °C. Each channel is led out of the tank through a sealed bushing with a standard ST connector, and oil does not leak through the optical path.
The continuous operating range of all types is from −200 to +260 °C, briefly up to +300 °C, with an accuracy of ±0.2 K. The thermal response is from 3 K/s for the TST to 20 K/s for the TS2P. The probe diameter is from 0.45 mm (TS2P) to 1.3 mm (TST), the cable length is 2–20 m, and for the TST 3–20 m. The sheath is polyimide or PTFE, and the optical connector is ST. The sensors are stable and repeatable, allow small bending radii and work with all FOTEMP instruments. Outside transformers they are used in switchgear and busbar ducts, high-voltage installations, nuclear power, aggressive environments, aerospace, laboratories and medicine.

Questions and answers
Which Optocon sensor should be chosen for the windings of a power transformer?
For oil-filled and dry transformers the TST is intended, with no air inclusions, and it is placed in the winding during manufacture. The thermal response of the TST is 3 K/s, and the cable length is 3–20 m.
What temperature range do the sensors withstand?
The continuous operating range is from −200 to +260 °C, briefly up to +300 °C. The accuracy is ±0.2 K.
Can the sensor be fitted on live parts under voltage?
Yes, the sensor is fully non-metallic and dielectric, so it is mounted directly on high-voltage conductors. Interference and microwave radiation do not affect the measurement.
