Description
Optimus OPT100 monitors the gases dissolved in the oil of a power transformer online. The manufacturer calls it the world's first multi-gas DGA monitor that needs no maintenance. The device has no consumables at all: no carrier or calibration gases, no internal columns, replaceable filters, filter wheels, membranes or capillaries. For substations in remote regions and at offshore sites this is essential, because every visit by personnel is expensive. According to the brochure, no parts are replaced over a service life of more than 15 years.
The gases are extracted from the oil under partial vacuum at a controlled temperature. There is no vacuum pump. In the patented method, the volume of oil in a cylinder works as a piston moved by a magnetic gear pump, and the oil is sprayed in the vacuum. Gas extraction is more complete than with headspace or membrane methods and depends much less on the Ostwald solubility coefficients. The method therefore gives stable results on different oils, even at very low total dissolved gas pressure in sealed or degassed transformers.
Detection is by infrared (NDIR). Each gas absorbs radiation at its own characteristic wavelengths, and these wavelengths do not change over time. The thermostatted IR module with auto-calibration keeps its stability for years without factory recalibration and without false alarms. The OPT100 measures the seven main fault gases and moisture, and with the option of direct O2 + N2 measurement it covers all nine gases. The total dissolved gas pressure (Total Gas Pressure) function together with O2 + N2 detects atmospheric air leaking into a sealed transformer, which cannot be seen from oxygen alone.
The monitor works with mineral oils and with natural and synthetic esters. The design is intended for conditions from the Arctic to the tropics: stainless steel tubing, an IP66 enclosure, thermostatting of the gas and oil path, and magnetic pumps and valves. There are no cooling fans. The AC and DC powered versions comply with IEC 61010 and have the same surge protection. The monitor is mounted on a rack, on a wall or on a wall with vibration damping.
Setup is done through the built-in web interface without additional software, and according to the manufacturer installation takes less than two hours. Self-diagnostics start at power-up and automatically restart the device after a power loss. The OPT100 is in operation, among others, at the Finnish system operator Fingrid, at an offshore wind farm and at CTM Salto Grande in Argentina and Uruguay.
