LineSIGHT — continuous monitoring and fault location system for 4–25 kV overhead lines
LineSIGHT is a continuous monitoring system for 4–25 kV overhead lines that detects and locates all types of faults. Data from clip-on and substation sensors is processed by the Sapient platform, which passes ready events with the fault location to the dispatcher.

Description
LineSIGHT monitors overhead distribution networks and finds the fault location without walking the line. It benefits most the utilities with long rural lines, where fault finding takes hours and bad weather causes broken conductors and mass outages. A conductor that hangs low and remains live is a direct danger to people, and the system detects such situations first. During storms, when several faults occur at once, the gain is especially noticeable.
Clip-on sensors are placed on the conductors along the line, a substation sensor is installed at the substation, and indirect sensors are also used. They continuously measure current, voltage and network geometry and register disturbances. The Sapient analytics platform processes more than 200 000 waveforms per hour, separates real events from transients and superimposed signatures, and passes already filtered and prioritised information to the control room for switching and crew dispatch.
The system recognises high- and low-impedance faults, earth faults, downed and low-hanging conductors, and nested faults, including those on a de-energised section behind a tripped circuit breaker. A 2026 brochure states a location accuracy of ±100 m on lines over 100 km. The manufacturer's website and the Electricity North West case give more modest figures, from ±300 m between phases to ±500 m between blocks and ±750 m on branches, so the accuracy for a specific network is clarified during design.
According to the manufacturer, LineSIGHT detects up to 70 % of faults before failure. These are cracked insulators, vegetation contact, conductor damage and developing nested defects. Repairs are planned without interrupting the supply to consumers. The same measurements give an estimate of line loading and dynamic capacity.
On the Electricity North West network the system registered 67 anomalies, on average about 5.6 per week, and the time from a fault to an estimate of its location averaged 11 minutes. The company plans to extend LineSIGHT to a larger part of its 11 kV network. Supply includes installation and support service during incidents.

Questions and answers
What voltage class is LineSIGHT intended for?
For 4–25 kV overhead distribution networks. In the UK the system is operated, among others, on an 11 kV network.
What is the fault location accuracy?
The 2026 brochure states ±100 m on lines over 100 km. The Electricity North West case gives ±300 m between phases and ±500 m between blocks.
Does the system see defects before an outage?
Yes, according to the manufacturer up to 70 % of faults are detected before failure, including cracked insulators and vegetation contact.
