INTEGO GM — online partial discharge monitor for generator stator insulation

INTEGO GM is an online partial discharge monitor for generator stator insulation with 4 channels and a 100 MHz sampling rate. It correlates PD with load and winding temperature, so trends keep their meaning even with frequent starts and variable operating modes.

Channels
4 simultaneous (3 phases + 1)
Sensors
existing capacitive sensors
Input range
> 20 V (peak-to-peak)
Resolution
12 bit (500 µV); amplitude < 5 %, time 10 ns

Description

INTEGO GM is installed on power plant generators for continuous monitoring of stator winding insulation by partial discharges. The PD trend over time shows how fast the insulation is ageing, but measurements can be compared correctly only at the same load, temperature and voltage. The standards IEC 60034-27-2 and IEEE 1434 recommend varying the operating mode during online measurements, which is rarely done in service. This monitor correlates each PD event with the operating mode of the machine and sorts the data by operating conditions.

A weekly summary of discharge energy, the PDE (PD Energy) map, is generated for different modes, including start-up and shutdown. The monitor counts starts and running hours, so it suits generators in flexible duty and with variable load. A white paper includes the PDE map of a 300 MVA turbogenerator, where activity was concentrated at high temperature at 140–300 MW. Data is presented at three levels. The basic level gives an instant picture of the condition without expert interpretation, the extended level contains trend parameters (Qmax, Qm+, Qm−, NQN, repetition rate) in mV and nC, and the research level opens PRPD patterns, correlation maps and pulse amplitude analysis according to IEEE 1434-2014 (Annex C).

The hardware has 4 simultaneous channels, three phases and an additional one, and works with existing capacitive sensors. The input range is over 20 V peak-to-peak, resolution is 12 bit (500 µV), and the sampling rate is 100 MHz. There are two bands, ultra-wide up to 50 MHz and wide according to IEC 60270. Dynamic noise suppression works automatically, so alarms work from the first day. The archive on a 32 GB SSD is designed for more than 5 years.

Communication uses Modbus, optionally DNP3 and IEC 61850, via USB, RS-232, RS-485, Ethernet, 3G, optical fibre or modem. There are 4 alarm relays, and inputs 4×PT100, 3×4–20 mA and 6 digital. Supply is 90–250 V AC, consumption 100 W. The IP56 enclosure works at a temperature of −45…+55 °C and humidity of 0–100 %, and installation is possible on a running machine. The built-in web server needs no special software, and the offline program compares several generators with each other.
