IKI-Overhead R2 / R2.5 fault indicators for overhead lines up to 36 kV, including versions with 4G data transmission
IKI-Overhead R2 and R2.5 are fault indicators for medium-voltage overhead lines up to 36 kV. They detect short circuits, transient faults and earth faults and show them with bright LEDs. The R2.5 version additionally transmits data over 4G.

Description
IKI-Overhead are fault indicators for medium-voltage overhead lines up to 36 kV. They make it possible to monitor an overhead line by simple means and to integrate it into the overall protection concept in order to shorten power supply interruptions. The indicators are hung directly on the conductor of each phase. Conductor diameter is 5–35 mm, operating temperature −30…+75 °C.
Fault detection. All typical overhead line faults are detected, namely short circuits, transient faults and earth faults. Overcurrent and short circuits are detected using an independent definite-time characteristic. The threshold is automatic or fixed at 200, 400 or 600 A, time 80 or 150 ms. High-resistance faults are detected by the rate of change of current dI/dt (R2) or by asymmetry (R2.5). Blocking against magnetizing inrush currents and confirmation of the fault by loss of voltage using a built-in voltage sensor are provided. Parameters are set with DIP switches accessible without tools. Reset takes place after 2, 4 or 8 hours, manually with a hot stick or automatically when the load current above 3 A is restored.
Indication and installation. Ultra-bright LEDs (13 cd, 30 flashes per minute) are visible from all sides, with a 360° viewing cone, at a distance of 50–100 m in bright sunlight and about 500 m at night. Installation is carried out with an insulating hot stick with a bayonet or ring, and a built-in tightening torque indicator shows correct mounting. A long service life is ensured by a lithium battery, nanowatt-consumption electronics and a non-corroding IP67 housing.
Versions. IKI-Overhead R2 has local indication, a battery for about 15 years, conductors of 20–490 mm², installation altitude up to 4500 m and wind up to 70 m/s. The R2 Puls variant is intended for networks with pulse earth-fault location. IKI-Overhead R2.5 is a set of two Radio units and one Butler for three-phase monitoring of the installation point with remote transmission. The Radio units communicate with the Butler over a short-range radio channel (up to 10 m, 2.4 GHz). The Butler, with a 4G LTE-M / NB-IoT modem, transmits by SMS or TCP/IP data on faults, conductor breaks without fault current, and averaged load currents. Parameterization is remote, by SMS or TCP/IP. Through the PONLINE gateway the indicators are connected to SCADA under IEC 60870-5-104 or DNP3. For R2.5, conductors are 20–960 mm² and battery life is more than 10 years.

Questions and answers
What faults does IKI-Overhead detect?
Short circuits, transient faults and earth faults. High-resistance faults are detected by the rate of change of current dI/dt in the R2 version or by asymmetry in R2.5.
What trip thresholds and times can be set?
The threshold is automatic or fixed at 200, 400 or 600 A, time 80 or 150 ms. Reset takes place after 2, 4 or 8 hours, manually with a hot stick or automatically when the load current above 3 A is restored.
How does the R2.5 version transmit data to the control centre?
Two Radio units transmit data to the Butler unit over a distance of up to 10 m at 2.4 GHz. The Butler, with a 4G LTE-M / NB-IoT modem, sends SMS or TCP/IP, and the PONLINE gateway passes the data to SCADA under IEC 60870-5-104 or DNP3.
