Hydrogen Sensor SE-030 / SE-031 and AOM1 module — hydrogen sensor for oil and gas space

Hydrogen Sensor SE-030 / SE-031 is a solid-state hydrogen sensor for online monitoring in transformers and other oil-filled equipment. Measuring range 25–5000 ppm, versions for the gas space and for oil, RS-485 Modbus RTU output. The AOM1 module converts the signal to 4–20 mA for monitors, relays and controllers.

Description

Hydrogen is generated across a wide range of thermal conditions, from partial discharges to open arcing. Therefore its continuous monitoring serves as an early indicator of internal defects and reduces dependence on costly oil sample analysis. The sensor comes in two versions: SE-030 measures in the gas space of transformers with a nitrogen blanket, and SE-031 measures in the oil. Measuring in the gas uses hydrogen's low solubility and its higher concentration in the gas phase, so the warnings are more stable than with monitoring near the drain valve.

The sensing element is based on palladium-nickel alloys with a protective coating. It is specific to hydrogen, insensitive to other transformer gases and does not saturate at high concentrations. The sensor measures oil temperature continuously and outputs a hydrogen signal corrected for it, which can be used to control relays. There are no membranes, consumables, moving parts or reference gas, and no calibration or carrier gas is needed. The expected service life is 10–15 years. Installation is possible on a transformer in operation without de-energising.

Measuring range 25–5000 ppm. Accuracy in oil is 20% of reading or 25 ppm, repeatability 10% or 15 ppm; in both cases the larger value applies. Cross-sensitivity is less than 1% in oil and less than 2% in gas. Operating temperature from −40 to 70 °C, oil temperature from −40 to 105 °C. Housing of hard-anodised aluminium 6061, protection rating IP68, corrosion resistance class C5M, vibration and shock tests per IEC 60068. Power supply 12–30 V DC, RS-485 Modbus RTU output, ¾″ NPT connection. Applicable to transformers of any class, instrument transformers, OLTCs and other oil-filled equipment.

The AOM1 analogue output module connects to the sensor and outputs a 4–20 mA signal with overrange up to 24 mA for any monitor, relay or controller. Oil type and output range are selected with DIP switches, so no computer is needed. The module in a die-cast aluminium IP68 housing measures 125 × 120 × 62 mm, weighs 387 g, is powered from 8.55–50.4 V DC and operates at temperatures from −40 to 70 °C. The kit suits distribution, industrial, underground and traction transformers, wind and solar farm transformers, and offshore platforms.

Questions and answers

What are the hydrogen measuring range and accuracy?

The range is 25–5000 ppm. Accuracy in oil is 20% of reading or 25 ppm, the larger value applies, with repeatability of 10% or 15 ppm.

How do the SE-030 and SE-031 versions differ?

SE-030 measures hydrogen in the gas space of transformers with a nitrogen blanket, SE-031 measures it in oil. Both are powered from 12–30 V DC and have an RS-485 Modbus RTU interface.

How is the sensor connected to a device with a 4–20 mA input?

Through the AOM1 module, which outputs 4–20 mA with overrange up to 24 mA and is powered from 8.55–50.4 V DC. Oil type and output range are set with DIP switches.
