Description
Owners of ever-growing equipment fleets face the same problem. Experts and diagnostic resources are scarce, and the energy transition brings less experienced operating staff into the industry. Making well-founded maintenance decisions in time is becoming harder. The expert system takes over the interpretation of monitoring and diagnostic results and turns them into an action plan built on data rather than on the intuition of an individual specialist. The slogan of the system, from monitoring to meaningful action, describes well its place in the chain. Sensors and diagnostic measurements provide an array of data, and the expert system turns it into specific tasks for the operating service with a clear priority.
The first function is the calculation of technical condition indices of the equipment and its components. The condition is assessed continuously, so work can be ranked by priority. The second function covers fleet management with comparative assessment. An overview at the level of the whole fleet shows which units need attention first and helps allocate maintenance resources between substations. This is especially useful when transformers of the same type stand at different sites and it has to be decided where to send a crew first. The third function gives expert recommendations on intervention, that is, it suggests when and how to act.
The system is integrated with the manufacturer's service. The logic is simple, since the manufacturer of the equipment remains the best source of information about its machines and of service offers for them. Expert System complements the hardware monitoring packages of the Intelligent Solutions platform. This platform for monitoring and digitalisation of assets was launched in 2022 with the intention of making intelligent monitoring available for every product that the plant builds or services. At the same time the expert system also works with transformer fleets of other manufacturers, so it can be used on a mixed fleet.
Users include grid companies (TSO/DSO), generating companies, large industrial enterprises, and operators of energy storage systems and data centres. For them the system becomes a tool for planning repairs and maintenance at the level of the whole fleet rather than of a single machine. The recommendations are based on the actual condition of the equipment, so resources are directed where the risk of failure is higher, not according to the calendar.
