ComPass A 2.0 / ComPass A short circuit and earth fault indicators with current monitoring and Modbus

ComPass A 2.0 is a short circuit and earth fault indicator with a load current monitoring function for medium voltage networks. It sends measured values, settings and fault events to the control room through RS-485/Modbus and relay contacts.

Description

ComPass A 2.0 is installed at primary substations of medium voltage distribution networks connected to telecontrol. The device does not show the direction of the fault and detects short circuits and earth faults from the signals of only three single-phase current sensors. Fault and pre-fault values are recorded with a time stamp, and faults are shown per phase on an OLED display and a multicolor LED.

The short circuit setting is 10–2000 A or is adjusted automatically in the range 200–2000 A depending on the load current, with a delay of 20 ms–60 s. The earth fault setting is 10–1000 A with a delay of 40 ms–60 s. The device detects earth faults by two methods: by the earth fault current and by the pulse method for resonant earthed networks (RESPE). For the pulse method the ΔIE> setting is 1–200 A. The indication can be reset with a button, remotely, by time from 1 min to 24 h, or after the current or auxiliary voltage is restored.

As a measuring device, ComPass A 2.0 monitors the load current with averaging of 1–60 min and records maxima over 24 h, 7 and 365 days. A PT100 sensor monitors the temperature of the transformer or the substation room, and the network frequency is measured separately. Signals are generated when current (5–1500 A) and temperature settings are exceeded. The accuracy of phase current measurement is better than 0.5 % with closed sensors and 1 % with split-core sensors.

For communication with the control room there is an RS-485 interface with the Modbus protocol, four potential-free programmable relay contacts rated 230 V AC / 1 A or 220 V DC / 1 A, and two binary inputs. Parameter setting and commissioning are done through the front USB port with the ComPass Explorer software. Power is supplied from an external 24–230 V AC/DC source or from a long-life lithium cell. The polycarbonate housing has an IP50 degree of protection, and the operating temperature range is −30…+70 °C. When moving to indicators with directional function and remote control, the sensors do not need to be replaced.

The previous ComPass A model remains in the manufacturer’s program among other products. It shows measured values and settings in the menu, transmits them over Modbus and stores the last 20 events. ComPass A is designed for networks with isolated and compensated neutral (NOSPE/KNOSPE), earth faults are detected by the earth fault current method with a setting of 20–1000 A, and the housing has an IP40 degree of protection.

Questions and answers

What trip settings does ComPass A 2.0 have?

The short circuit setting is 10–2000 A or self-adjustment within 200–2000 A, with a delay of 20 ms–60 s. The earth fault setting is 10–1000 A with a delay of 40 ms–60 s.

Is ComPass A 2.0 suitable for resonant earthed networks?

Yes, for RESPE networks the device has a pulse earth fault detection method with a setting of 1–200 A. The previous ComPass A model is designed only for NOSPE/KNOSPE networks.

How is ComPass A 2.0 connected to telecontrol?

Through an RS-485 interface with the Modbus protocol and four programmable relay contacts rated 230 V AC / 1 A or 220 V DC / 1 A. There are also two binary inputs.
