Description
The AMI (Advanced Metering Infrastructure) complex covers the whole metering chain: a radio module in the meter, the communication network, the Head End main system and the MDM meter data management system. According to the manufacturer, the company remains the only Japanese company that supplies such a system completely, from the meter to the MDM. Development is carried out by the Power ICT Center within the BLEnDer package of ICT products for power systems, which also includes control of large energy storage systems and DERMS for distribution companies. Smart meters with a communication function began to be introduced in Japan in 2014, and the company has been developing the BLEnDer MESH platform since 2007, having considered multi-hop radio communication the best channel for meters from the start.
The basis of communication is the BLEnDer MESH wireless mesh network modules. Each module passes the meter reading in a chain through neighbouring modules, that is, a multi-hop radio network. In this way one network covers large territories with low infrastructure costs. Where a radio channel is not suitable, other communication methods are used, three in total. The Head End manages the meters, generates commands for them and merges the data received over all three channels into one stream.
The manufacturer explains the high share of collected data by operation on three levels. The first is a network design tool that, taking into account the module installation location, selects the most advantageous communication method. The second is antennas for long-range radio communication, which the company develops and manufactures in Japan. The third is the BLEnDer MESH software algorithms, in which modules exchange two-way commands at a set interval, detect a fault on the route and switch to another path. The timing of multi-hop transmission is managed by the system so that packets are not lost.
The MDM collects readings, performs automated meter reading, monitors the state of communication with each metering point and sends fault notifications. This data also serves for operation of the distribution network. Consumption readings arrive every 30 minutes. The exchange protocol is aligned with IEC 61968, which simplifies integration with other information systems of the utility.
The manufacturer regards AMI as a large IoT platform, on whose network the utility can deploy additional services, from more rational work with consumers to more accurate planning of electricity supply. In 2018 the system received the Minister of MEXT Award at the 47th Japan Industrial Technology Award.
