B100 — electronic transformer temperature monitor with optional hydrogen and moisture sensor
B100 is an electronic temperature monitor (ETM) for distribution, network and generator transformers that replaces analogue dial gauges. One device combines measurement of top-oil and winding temperatures, cooling control, alarm signalling and trip relays. Optional hydrogen and moisture sensors add early detection of internal faults through gases, with the signal sent to a remote point.

Description
The device calculates up to three winding temperatures, monitors the difference between OLTC and oil temperatures and controls the cooling circuits, so one B100 replaces up to five mechanical gauges. The base unit has two RTD inputs, three current inputs, a digital input, six digital outputs, two analogue outputs and a system alarm. No recalibration is needed to maintain accuracy. If a fault occurs in the device itself, it generates a signal, and fail-safe contacts switch the cooling on. The housing is protected against water, dirt, dust and temperature changes.
Operating voltage 48–240 V DC or 110–240 V AC, 50–60 Hz, operating temperature from −40 to 70 °C. Communication via USB and Ethernet, copper 100Base-T with an RJ45 connector or optical 100Base-FX with SC or ST connectors. RS-485 or an optical serial port for SCADA is optional. Protocols DNP, Modbus and IEC 61850. The base housing has protection rating IP66 (NEMA-4), and the IP31 version (equivalent to NEMA-2) is intended for flush and surface panel mounting. For quick retrofit there is a magnetic mounting kit and a magnetic top-oil temperature sensor, a three-wire PT-100 with a stainless steel armoured cable.
The display with backlight is visible from 18 m. It cycles through the main temperatures and is easy to read in poor visibility. Unlike mechanical gauges, the B100 keeps a long history of temperatures and alarm events in real time or for later download. Built-in web pages show current temperatures with four setpoint levels for each input, calculated hottest-spot temperatures of the windings, the OLTC and oil temperature difference, accumulated thermal ageing of insulation and up to three load currents. Test runs of the fans are also scheduled there.
The hydrogen option adds a sensor in the gas space or in the oil with a range of 25–5000 ppm and patented auto-calibration, so no on-site calibration is needed. The gas-space sensor usually responds faster. The combined hydrogen and moisture sensor also measures water content, oil temperature and pressure, and has an RS-485 Modbus output with programmable speed. Excess moisture in the winding paper lowers dielectric strength and the partial discharge inception voltage, so monitoring it gives an early warning. Data can be sent to the control centre over the existing wires via the iBridge system. Accessories include auxiliary current transformers 1000:1, RTD sensors for a ½″ NPT thermowell, and cables and adapters for DGA fittings.

Questions and answers
How many mechanical gauges can the B100 replace?
Up to five, taking into account OLTC and oil temperature difference monitoring. The device measures top-oil temperature, calculates up to 3 winding temperatures and controls cooling.
Which interfaces and protocols does the monitor support?
Standard USB and Ethernet 100Base-T (RJ45) or 100Base-FX (SC/ST), optionally RS-485 or an optical serial port. Protocols DNP, Modbus and IEC 61850.
Which housing versions does the B100 come in?
IP66 (NEMA-4) housing, and an IP31 (NEMA-2) version for flush and surface panel mounting. For retrofits, the NEMA-4 housing can be fixed with magnets.
