3EX5 and Sensarrester — surge counters and surge arrester monitoring systems
3EX5 is a line of surge arrester monitoring devices, from a simple surge counter to the ACM condition monitor with third-harmonic analysis of the leakage current. The Sensarrester™ system sends arrester condition data to the cloud and shows it in a web browser and a mobile app. The devices are installed in substations and on overhead lines to spot arrester degradation in time and to plan maintenance by actual condition.

Description
Surge arresters last up to 30 years, but an unforeseen overload can damage a unit ahead of time. The whole network feels the consequences of such a failure, so at critical nodes the arrester condition is monitored with instruments. The company offers several levels of such monitoring, and all devices are installed on existing arresters without modification.
The simplest device, 3EX5 030, is built into the grounding lead. It counts the current impulses that have passed through the arrester and suits both single units and three-phase sets. The 3EX5 050 counter also measures leakage current and shows it on a pointer milliammeter as the peak value divided by √2, with a range up to 10 mA or, in a special version, up to 50 mA. It is fitted only on single-phase arresters. Versions 3EX5 030-1 and 3EX5 050-1 have a passive auxiliary contact for remote signaling. The 3EX5 060/062 kit splits the functions between a sensor in the lead, which counts operations and continuously measures leakage current, and a remote display 3EX5 062 at a distance of up to 200 m. The display has a socket for local leakage current measurement, for example with an oscilloscope.
The ACM (Arrester Condition Monitor) condition monitor measures the total leakage current and current impulses, and analyzes the third harmonic of the leakage current with compensation for network harmonics and temperature correction. It shows the arrester condition with LEDs on a traffic-light principle. The basic version 3EX5 080-0 is upgraded to 3EX5 080-1 with a wireless USB module and the free ACM Service Tool program for data analysis, parameter setting and software updates. Extended devices keep a daily leakage current log for years for trend analysis.
Sensarrester™ moves monitoring to the level of a digital substation. One 3EX5 090 device serves the three arresters of a three-phase group and sends the minimum necessary amount of data through an IoT gateway to a cloud platform over the GSM network. The operator sees leakage currents, the number of operations, a log of recent events, the temperature and weather conditions at the moment of an impulse, and the total operating time. Alarms arrive by e-mail and push notifications, and the map in the app shows all Sens products of the company, from transformers and GIS to circuit breakers. Typical applications are substations and overhead lines of all voltage classes and nodes with high lightning activity.

Questions and answers
Can a 3EX5 counter be installed on an arrester that is already in service?
Yes, all devices of the line are installed on existing arresters without modification. The 3EX5 030 counter is built into the grounding lead of the arrester.
How far from the arrester can the 3EX5 062 display be placed?
The remote display 3EX5 062 is installed in a convenient place at a distance of up to 200 m from the 3EX5 060 sensor. It has a socket for local leakage current measurement with an oscilloscope.
How many arresters does one Sensarrester device monitor?
One 3EX5 090 device monitors three arresters, that is a three-phase group. Data is available around the clock through a web browser and a mobile app.
