ZF53 / IFT SF6 gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) 126–550 kV, including SF6/N2 and clean-air designs with vacuum interrupters
The ZF53 and IFT series are gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) for 126–550 kV. They are installed at substations, large power plants and converter substations of trunk networks. Alongside classic SF6 apparatus there are SF6/N2 designs and clean-air designs with vacuum interrupters.

Description
GIS modules include circuit breakers, disconnectors, earthing switches including fast-acting ones, current and voltage transformers, busbars, bushings, expansion joints, cable terminations and control cabinets. All live parts are enclosed in earthed metal housings with SF6 gas, which serves as insulation and arc-quenching medium. Deliveries include 550 kV GIS for the Jinchuan hydropower plant, the Dushanbe-2 thermal power plant in Tajikistan, the Baihetan–Jiangsu transmission link and pumped storage plants. The range is extended by the ZF53-800 series at 800 kV.
The ZF53-550 is rated for a rated current of 4000, 5000 or 6300 A, a breaking current of 63 kA for 3 s and a peak withstand current of 171 kA. The lightning impulse test voltage LI is 1675 kV, the switching impulse SI is 1300 kV, and the short-duration power frequency voltage is 740 kV to earth. The control cabinet is three-phase, the layout is modular and compact, and the apparatus has high seismic withstand and low noise. The ZF53-363 at 4000 A and 63 kA operates at 330 kV substations and power plants, including renewable stations in north-west China and offshore platforms. Class E2-C2-M2, gas leakage below 0.1% a year, mechanical endurance 10,000 operations.
The IFT-252 at 3150/4000 A and 50 kA has a three-dimensional modular layout and a control cabinet integrated with the bay. Bays are transported assembled and adjusted, so on-site installation is shorter. The circuit breaker is equipped with a self-generated pressure interrupter. The product passed full type tests at CESI and meets corrosion protection category C5-M. The version on a mixture of 30% SF6 and 70% N2 has a carbon footprint of 28% of GIS on pure SF6 and a low gas liquefaction temperature.
The ZF53-126 and ZF53-145 are three-phase in a single aluminium enclosure with three-position disconnector-earthing switches, for currents up to 3150 A and a breaking current of 40 kA for 4 s. They are compact, maintenance-free and have a low life-cycle cost. The SF6/N2 version of the ZF53-126 reduces the bay pitch to 800 mm with a carbon footprint of 35% of pure SF6 and suits very cold regions. The environmentally friendly 126 kV GIS operates on clean air with 79.5% N2 and 20.5% O2 and vacuum interrupters. The GWP is zero, there are no toxic breaking by-products, and operation is possible at −55 °C without heating. According to the manufacturer, this is the largest commercial deployment of vacuum eco-friendly GIS.
