VECTOR — air-insulated switchgear 12 and 24 kV with vacuum circuit breakers, SF6-free

VECTOR is air-insulated medium-voltage switchgear for indoor installation at 12 and 24 kV with vacuum circuit breakers and no SF6 gas. It is built at the plant in Vaasa (Finland) for substations of distribution networks, power plants, wind and solar farms, energy storage systems, industry and data centers.

Description

The VECTOR cabinet is divided by metal partitions into isolated busbar, circuit breaker, cable, low-voltage and relay compartments. In case of an internal arc the damage does not spread beyond the compartment, and the consequences of a fault for the rest of the equipment and for personnel are limited. The internal arc classification is IAC AFLR, with arc withstand of 40 kA for 1 s at 12 kV and 25 kA at 24 kV. Short-circuit and arc tests were carried out at the IPH laboratory up to 40/100 kA.

The rated parameters of the 12 kV version are as follows: test voltage 28 kV, lightning impulse 75 kV, short-time withstand current up to 40 kA (3 s), peak withstand current 100 kA, busbars up to 3150 A, circuit breakers rated 630, 1250, 1600, 2000, 2500 and 3150 A. For 24 kV the corresponding values are 50 kV, 125 kV, up to 25 kA and 63 kA, with busbars rated up to 2500 A and circuit breakers rated 630–2500 A. The cubicle is 2200 mm high, 800 or 1000 mm wide and 1600 mm deep.

Full electrical and mechanical interlocking blocks access to hazardous parts. All operations are performed from the front with the doors closed, individual automatic shutters, padlocks and a capacitive voltage indicator are provided. The loss of service continuity category is LSC2B-PM, so the circuit breaker can be serviced while the switchgear is in operation, although the manufacturer recommends working on de-energized switchgear. The enclosure has degree of protection IP4X and impact resistance IK10.

The large cable compartment usually holds from 1 to 8 cables per phase, and cable current transformers are placed there as well. Servicing is possible from the front or from inside the cabinet, so no space behind is needed. VECTOR accepts protection relay terminals of any make, and the customer keeps the protection and automation platform already adopted at the site. Two VECTOR lines are connected with a compatible medium-voltage busbar trunking.

Compliance with IEC 62271-200 is confirmed by the full scope of type and routine tests. A life cycle assessment (LCA) has been carried out for VECTOR, and the design allows a high degree of material recycling. The cubicles are shipped after factory acceptance tests, which reduces testing and commissioning on site. All cubicles are built at one plant, which the manufacturer calls the largest switchgear production in the Nordic countries.

Questions and answers

What are the rated parameters of VECTOR switchgear at 12 and 24 kV?

For 12 kV the short-time withstand current is up to 40 kA (3 s), busbars up to 3150 A, circuit breakers 630–3150 A. For 24 kV up to 25 kA, busbars up to 2500 A, circuit breakers 630–2500 A.

Can the circuit breaker be serviced without switching off the whole switchgear?

The loss of service continuity category LSC2B-PM allows the circuit breaker to be serviced while the switchgear is in operation. The manufacturer nevertheless recommends working on de-energized switchgear.

What are the dimensions of a VECTOR cubicle and how many cables can be connected?

Height 2200 mm, width 800 or 1000 mm, depth 1600 mm. The cable compartment usually holds from 1 to 8 cables per phase, and no space behind the cabinet is needed.
