Gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) 24–300 kV

Gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) for 72–300 kV and, for railways, cubicle-type GIS for 24 and 72 kV. It takes up less space than open-air switchgear and is sealed from the environment. It is installed at substations of power systems, industrial enterprises and power plants, and at traction substations.

Description

In GIS, the current-carrying parts, circuit breakers, disconnectors and earthing switches are placed in earthed metal enclosures filled with SF6 gas. SF6 has a higher dielectric strength than air, so insulation distances are shortened and the switchgear occupies a small area. Dust, moisture and contamination do not reach the current-carrying parts, which often decides the choice in favor of GIS for urban and industrial substations. The enclosures are gas-tight, and the condition of the insulation is monitored by the SF6 pressure or density.

The manufacturer has experience in developing and supplying GIS in the 72–300 kV range and stresses their safety, ease of operation and small footprint. For the railway sector, a 24 kV cubicle-type gas-insulated GIS was developed in 2001 and a 72 kV cubicle-type GIS in 2014. Both versions are intended for traction and distribution substations.

GIS is part of a complete supply of substation equipment from extra-high to low voltage. This includes oil-immersed power transformers, among them generator step-up units and high-voltage, high-power step-down transformers, dry-type transformers with cast epoxy insulation, medium- and low-voltage switchgear and control centers, and substation monitoring and control systems. For oil-immersed transformers, a version with a fire-resistant soy-based insulating oil is available. An oil-immersed transformer can be designed for direct connection to GIS, without open busbars between them.

The manufacturer carries out systematic planning, design, manufacture, installation and commissioning of turnkey substations. Rated currents, breaking currents and main connection diagrams are not given on the published pages and are defined in the technical specification for a particular site. An inquiry needs the voltage class, the substation diagram, the number of bays, the rated currents of busbars and bays, the short-circuit current of the grid and the installation conditions.

GIS is used where space is short or the environment is aggressive, that is at urban and industrial substations, railway traction substations and power plant substations. The cubicle-type versions for 24 and 72 kV are compact and suit traction substations where the equipment is housed in a building of limited size.

Questions and answers

What voltage classes is GIS made for?

The experience in development and supply covers GIS for 72–300 kV. For railways there are cubicle-type GIS for 24 kV (since 2001) and for 72 kV (since 2014).

Can a transformer be connected directly to GIS?

Yes, an oil-immersed transformer can be designed for direct connection to GIS. Both units are part of the complete supply of substation equipment.

Which sites are these GIS suitable for?

They are used at substations of power systems and industrial enterprises, at power plant substations and at railway traction substations. The compactness of GIS matters where space is limited.
