Description
The switchgear is assembled and tested at the factory. No gas pressure monitoring is needed, and the modular design simplifies extending the switchboard. It is installed in power system substations, at incomers and sections of industrial plants, pumping stations, thermal and hydro plants, for starting MV motors, in packaged substations and distribution networks.
MTW03 is designed for a voltage up to 17.5 kV, a current up to 3150 A and a short-circuit current of 25 or 31.5 kA with the classification IAC BF ALR 31.5 kA 1 s. Cell width is 650 mm up to 1250 A and 1000 mm from 1600 A. MTW04 works up to 17.5 kV, 4000 A and 40 or 50 kA with the classification IAC AFLR 50 kA 1 s, and its 24 kV (up to 1250 A, 25 kA) and 36 kV (up to 2500 A, up to 31.5 kA) variants cover higher voltage classes. MTW05 offers up to 17.5 kV, up to 2500 A, 25 or 31.5 kA, IAC BF ALR 31.5 kA 1 s, a width of 600–950 mm and partition class PI. The MTW04 MCC motor control center works up to 12 kV, 4000 A and 50 kA, and a cabinet 900 mm wide holds two contactor cells of 400 A each.
The loss of service continuity category is LSC 2B, in the MCC LSC 2A, the partitions are metallic PM, and the degree of protection is IP-4X (MTW05 IP-41). Seismic withstand is confirmed according to UBC-4 for 0.6 g horizontally and 0.36 g vertically. Ambient temperature is from −5 to +40 °C, altitude up to 1000 m, and for higher altitudes an insulation correction is applied.
The enclosure undergoes alkaline degreasing, phosphating and powder painting. During an arc, the gases exit through pressure relief flaps at the top or on the side. The busbars are made of electrolytic copper with tin-plated joints. The cabinet is divided into LV, breaker, busbar and cable compartments with CTs and VTs, and the LV compartment with instruments, protection and terminals is located at the top front behind a steel partition.
Interlocks prevent withdrawing a closed breaker, closing the earthing switch with the device inserted, and opening the door of a live compartment. The device is moved between the service and test positions with the door closed, and automatic shutters cover the contacts. In contactor cells, a blown fuse trips the contactor. The devices inside comply with IEC 62271-100, -102, -105, -106, IEC 60282-1, IEC 61869-2 and -3.

Questions and answers
What voltage and current do MTW switchgear units have?
MTW03, MTW04 and MTW05 are built for a voltage up to 17.5 kV, and MTW04 variants for 24 and 36 kV exist. The highest rated current, 4000 A, belongs to MTW04.
What internal arc resistance do the cabinets have?
MTW03 and MTW05 have the classification IAC BF ALR 31.5 kA 1 s, MTW04 is classified IAC AFLR 50 kA 1 s. Arc gases exit through pressure relief flaps at the top or on the side.
Is SF6 gas used in MTW switchgear?
No, the insulation is air, so SF6 gas and pressure monitoring are not needed. The cabinets have type tests according to IEC 62271-200.
