Description
High and extra-high voltage SF6 gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) is intended for power system substations, power plants and large industrial consumers. According to the manufacturer's overview catalogue, the programme covers the classes 72.5/145 kV (rated current up to 3150 A, breaking current up to 40 kA), 170 kV (up to 4000 A, up to 50 kA, breaker with hybrid arc extinction), 245/252 kV (up to 4000 A, up to 50 kA, hybrid arc extinction) and 420 kV (4000 A, 50 kA, horizontal-type breakers). The same range includes medium-voltage GIS 25.8/36 kV (up to 3150 A, up to 40 kA).
The g3 GIS is singled out separately. The manufacturer positions its 170 kV / 50 kA GIS on g3 gas as the first in the world in this class. The insulating and arc-extinguishing medium is a mixture of Novec 4710 with CO₂ and O₂, with a global warming potential of 380 against 23 500 for SF6, that is, more than 98 % lower. The insulating properties are 85–100 % of those of SF6 depending on temperature and pressure, the gas is non-flammable, comparable to SF6 in toxicity and compatible with traditional high-voltage equipment materials.
Characteristics of the g3 GIS for 170 kV: rated current 1250, 2000, 3150 and 4000 A, short-time withstand current 50 kA for 1 s, making capacity 130 kA, frequency 60 Hz, power frequency test voltage 325 kV and lightning impulse 750 kV, breaker mechanical class M2, operating temperature −25…+40 °C.
Other eco-friendly versions include a 145 kV / 40 kA GIS on dry air (170 and 245 kV breakers with vacuum interrupters are still in development), a 145 kV GIS (all phases in one enclosure) and a 170 kV / 40 kA GIS (phase-segregated design) on Novec 5110 ketone. On g3 there are 72.5 and 145 kV GIS and hybrid DAIS 72.5 and 145 kV, while 420 kV GIS and gas-insulated lines (GIL) are in development.
For operation, online diagnostics are offered, namely partial discharge monitoring by the UHF method and prediction of breaker contact wear. Applications are 110–400 kV substations, power plant switchgear, city substations with limited space and projects with requirements to reduce F-gas emissions.

Questions and answers
Which voltage classes and currents does the SF6 GIS programme cover?
The classes 72.5/145 kV (up to 3150 A, 40 kA), 170 kV (up to 4000 A, 50 kA), 245/252 kV (up to 4000 A, 50 kA) and 420 kV (4000 A, 50 kA). The range also includes medium-voltage GIS 25.8/36 kV up to 3150 A and 40 kA.
How does the eco-friendly g3 GIS differ from SF6 GIS?
Instead of SF6 it uses a mixture of Novec 4710 with CO₂ and O₂, whose global warming potential is 380 against 23 500 for SF6, that is, more than 98 % lower. The insulating properties are 85–100 % of those of SF6 depending on temperature and pressure.
What rated parameters does the 170 kV g3 GIS have?
Rated current 1250, 2000, 3150 or 4000 A, short-time withstand current 50 kA for 1 s, making capacity 130 kA. Power frequency test voltage is 325 kV, lightning impulse 750 kV, operating temperature −25…+40 °C.
