Gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) 72–1100 kV
This GIS is intended for substations of transmission and distribution networks and for power plant switchgear at voltages from 72 to 1100 kV. The company has produced SF6 circuit breakers since 1968, when it commercialized the first such unit in Japan.

Description
All elements of a GIS bay are placed in earthed metal enclosures filled with SF6 gas. The bay includes circuit breakers, disconnectors and earthing switches, current and voltage transformers, surge arresters, busbars, and cable or overhead line terminations. The dielectric strength of SF6 makes it possible to reduce insulation clearances several times compared with an open-air switchyard, so the substation occupies a much smaller area. The earthed metal enclosure also protects live parts from dust, moisture and contamination, so the insulation does not depend on the climate at the site.
Among the advantages of its GIS the manufacturer names space saving, layout flexibility and a smaller volume of civil and erection work on site, and therefore shorter installation times. Maintenance is reduced to a minimum, and operational safety is built into the design. For urban substations, indoor switchgear and the extension of existing facilities without additional land, these are the main arguments in favor of GIS.
The basis of the bay is the SF6 circuit breaker. In developing it the company uses, among other things, thermal analysis of gas flows during current interruption. Since the first unit appeared in 1968, the company has supplied circuit breakers and GIS across the whole range from 72 to 1100 kV. For the 550 kV class, circuit breakers are made in both dead tank and live tank types, and the range of breakers and their operating mechanisms is being updated. The company produces surge arresters of various types, including insulator-type units for 500 kV for transformers.
GIS are part of the company's equipment range for nuclear power plants, where they are installed in the switchgear connecting the plant to the grid. The same units are used in open and indoor switchgear of other power plants. They are also used to equip transmission substations of extra-high voltage networks, where compactness and minimum maintenance bring the greatest benefit.
Recently the company has been developing an SF6-free line with zero CO2-equivalent emissions. The experience of vacuum switching and dry-air insulation gained on medium-voltage equipment is being transferred to units of higher voltage classes in accordance with the published roadmap. For the customer this means the prospect of substations without fluorinated gases in future projects.
