GIS up to 550/800 kV and SF₆-free AEROXIA on natural gases

Gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) for voltages up to 550 kV, and up to 800 kV in turnkey substation projects. It takes up much less space than open-air switchgear and works in densely populated areas, in the mountains and underground. Under the AEROXIA brand the company makes equipment insulated with natural gases, without fluorinated gases.

Voltage
up to 550 kV (turnkey substations, FTK, up to 800 kV)
Example
420 kV, 80 kA (Kuwait); 500 kV, Shinkoga substation (TEPCO)
AEROXIA
72/84 kV GIS on natural gases without fluorinated gases; 300 kV GCB and GIB; 420/550 kV gas-insulated busbars
Monitoring
per IEC 61850

Description

The current-carrying parts of the GIS are placed inside grounded metal enclosures. Personnel have no access to live parts, and the maintenance scope is smaller than at open-air switchgear. The equipment is resistant to salt fog, sandstorms and humid climates, so it is installed on the coast, in arid regions and in the tropics.

The company developed a 550 kV GIS that is the first in the world to be transported whole. An example of a delivery in Japan is the 500 kV GIS at the Shinkoga substation (TEPCO Power Grid). For Kuwait the company supplied a 420 kV, 80 kA substation, which exceeds the network short-circuit current of 63 kA with a margin.

The company has built turnkey GIS substations abroad since the 1970s (elsewhere the manufacturer gives 1978) and has delivered more than 100 such projects of up to 800 kV. A 380/132 kV substation in Saudi Arabia with 11 bays at 380 kV and 23 bays at 132 kV was built in 19.5 months.

SF₆ gas has a global warming potential 25 200 times higher than CO₂. Under the AEROXIA brand the company is expanding its line of substation equipment insulated with natural gases. It includes a 72/84 kV GIS, a joint development with Meidensha and the first eco-friendly GIS in Japan for a system operator, 420/550 kV gas-insulated busbars, as well as DT-GCB circuit breakers and 300 kV busbars selected by TEPCO Power Grid.

The equipment supports substation digitalization and can be fitted with monitoring and diagnostic systems per IEC 61850. GIS is used at substations of 72–550 kV of grid companies, for power plant output, and at urban and underground substations. GIS, transformers and surge arresters are made at the Hamakawasaki plant in Kawasaki, and the high-voltage test laboratories are JAB accredited.
