ECOS-Z — compact 12/24 kV SF6-free switchgear with synthetic ester insulation
ECOS-Z is an environmentally friendly compact medium-voltage switchgear for 12 and 24 kV with a busbar rated current of 630 A. Instead of SF6, the high-voltage parts are insulated with a synthetic ester-based fluid, and the panel pitch is only 240 mm. The switchgear is designed for networks where the use of SF6 is prohibited.

Description
Since 1 January 2026, the EU has banned SF6 in switchgear for 20 kV networks, and ECOS-Z was designed as a response to this ban. The high-voltage parts are insulated with a synthetic ester-based fluid (grade 7131), about 15 kg per panel with a circuit breaker. The system operates without overpressure, the fluid is classified as non-hazardous to water, and it is fully recyclable.
The high-voltage part together with the cable compartment has a fully single-pole enclosure, so the panel pitch is reduced to 240 mm. The switching elements are made as vacuum interrupters. Phase-by-phase insulation rules out multi-pole arcing faults, and in case of an internal fault there is no critical pressure rise, so pressure relief and IAC classification are not required for this switchgear. According to the manufacturer, it is the first switchgear in the world of its power class with practically no pressure rise during a fault.
The characteristics to EN IEC 62271-200 are as follows. Rated voltage 24 kV (12 and 24 kV range), 50 Hz, busbar rated current 630 A, short-time withstand current 20 kA, peak withstand current 50 kA. Insulation 50/60 kV power frequency and 125/145 kV lightning impulse (to earth / across the isolating distance). The vacuum circuit breaker to EN 62271-100 has a breaking current of 20 kA, 3 s, class M2 (10 000 operations), E1, cycle O-0.3 s-CO-3 min-CO. The operating mechanism is spring-operated with manual charging, motor optional, control voltage DC 24–110 V or AC 230 V.
The enclosure has degree of protection IP2X (IP3X optional), the circuit breaker and busbar compartments IP67, loss of service continuity category LSC 2 PM. Temperature from −25 to +40 °C, installation altitude is not limited. The circuit breaker panel is designated T4, the busbar panel T0, and cable and transformer panels are also available. Blocks consist of 2–7 panels, height 1400 mm (1900 mm in total with the LV compartment), depth 1040 mm. Options include current transformers or sensors, voltage transformers or resistive dividers, short-circuit indicators, voltage detection systems, the IKI-35 transformer protection relay and UPS.
The switchgear is installed in distribution and urban power networks, at data centers and critical infrastructure, in industry, at renewable energy and energy storage facilities, and in attended and unattended transformer substations.
