Description

The modular principle makes it possible to build and extend traction substations, sectioning posts and paralleling posts of the AC overhead contact line quickly. No enclosed buildings are needed for this. The insulation is air, and the switchgear itself is designed to operate in the open air. A substation is assembled from standard modules, so the switchgear can be extended by adding new modules to the existing ones.

Each module contains a load-bearing steel structure and outdoor switching devices from the manufacturer's railway range that comply with EN 50152-2. These include load-break switches and disconnectors of the 768 and ModularCatenarySwitch (MCS) series for 15 and 25 kV with currents of 1250–2000 A, earthing switches, and UM and UMPlus motor drives for remote control. The 768 and MCS series cover both AC voltages used on railways, 15 and 25 kV, and the drives make it possible to operate the devices without personnel going out to the gantry.

MCS devices are rated for a short-time withstand current of 31.5–40 kA for 3 s and a peak withstand current of 80–100 kA. The impulse insulation level is 170 kV for 15 kV and 250 kV for 25 kV. Current-carrying parts are made of silver-plated copper and other parts of corrosion-resistant materials, which matters for outdoor installation. Each module is tested at the factory before shipment, so mostly assembly and connection remain to be done on site.

Compared with an individual layout of devices on gantries, a modular switchgear reduces the amount of design and installation work on site, because the modules are prepared and tested at the factory. Detailed parameters of a specific configuration are determined during design.

The switchgear is used at traction substations and sectioning posts of AC railways of 15 kV 16.7 Hz and 25 kV 50 Hz. It is also suitable for temporary and mobile power supply points during construction and reconstruction and for industrial railway transport facilities. The set of modules is defined by the scheme of the specific substation, and the devices are selected within the given voltage and current ranges.
