Description
The 8BT2 is a factory-built metal-enclosed switchgear assembly for indoor installation at voltages up to 36 kV. It is installed in transformer and distribution substations for primary power distribution. The busbars and feeders are insulated by air, and switching is performed by vacuum circuit breakers. The design needs no SF6, so there are no related environmental issues, and handling the insulating medium during installation, operation and disposal is simpler.
The switchgear complies with IEC 62271-200. Loss of service continuity category LSC 2B and partition class PM mean that a single compartment can be opened for work while the neighboring feeders stay in service. Metallic partitions separate the compartments from each other, so work in one of them does not affect the rest. The circuit breakers are withdrawable. In daily operation this means selective maintenance, where only the required compartment is disconnected and the rest of the row stays in service.
Personnel safety is supported by the internal arc classification IAC A FLR. The switchgear has been tested for a current up to 31.5 kA with an arc duration of 1 s. The letter A means that only authorized personnel have access to the equipment, and the letters FLR indicate the sides of the enclosure covered by the test: front, lateral and rear.
The switching devices are maintenance free, and the service intervals exceed 10 years. For the substation owner this means lower operating costs and higher equipment availability. Fewer scheduled works mean fewer outages of network sections over the entire service life of the switchgear. The expected service life is 30 years. The materials are fully recyclable, so disposal after decommissioning is also simple.
Typical applications are 20–35 kV substations of distribution networks and industrial plants where air insulation and withdrawable vacuum circuit breakers are required. Detailed electrical characteristics, namely the rated currents of busbars and feeders and the dimensions, are not given in the public materials. They are confirmed from the manufacturer's catalog for the specific substation scheme before the specification is drawn up and the room layout is planned.
