Description
VP is a vertical multistage cryogenic process pump for continuous operation with all liquefied air gases. The first pump of this technology for heavy duty was released in the early 1990s. The manufacturer calls VP the benchmark for the world industrial gas industry, with more than 600 machines in operation on five continents. The main purpose is internal compression of products in air separation units. The pump is also used for recirculation, product delivery, as a backup for oxygen, nitrogen and argon, in methane flushing units and in LNG.
The wetted part is made of tin bronze and placed in a stainless steel barrel casing. The pump is oxygen compatible and degreased for oxygen service. The modular multistage design allows the pump to be matched to a specific duty point, and a variable frequency drive allows operation in several modes. Impeller diameters range from 115 to 330 mm: up to 12 stages for sizes 115, 145, 185 and 240 mm, up to 8 for 270 mm, up to 7 for 310 mm and up to 6 for 330 mm. The flow range is from 25 to 5000 L/min, pressure up to 130 bar (1900 psig). An inducer upstream reduces the required NPSH and eases priming.
The pump is mounted on the cold box through a rigid insulating flange made of composite material, which also acts as a thermal break. A closed nitrogen-purged intermediate chamber (warm box) and bearing heating allow the pump to be kept in permanent cold standby and started immediately. The seals are made as replaceable cartridges. These are labyrinth 2- or 3-chamber, dry gas single or double (for methane flushing) or composite mechanical seals for short-term operation. The cartridge is replaced without dismantling the cold part.
The temperature of the front bearing is monitored by two PT100 sensors, and seal gas leakage by a PT100 sensor in the warm chamber. Control panels for seal gas and purge gas are offered. Materials are selected according to EIGA and CGA recommendations (IGC 11/82), and every pump is tested at the duty point on liquid nitrogen on the factory test stand.

Questions and answers
What flow and pressure range does the VP pump have?
Flow from 25 to 5000 L/min (1350 gal/min), pressure up to 130 bar (1900 psig). The range depends on the impeller diameter of 115–330 mm and the number of stages.
How many stages can be fitted depending on impeller size?
Up to 12 stages for impellers of 115, 145, 185 and 240 mm, up to 8 for 270 mm, up to 7 for 310 mm and up to 6 for 330 mm.
What types of seals and monitoring are provided?
Replaceable cartridges are used: labyrinth 2- or 3-chamber, dry gas single or double, or composite mechanical seals. The front bearing temperature is monitored by two PT100 sensors, and seal gas leakage by one more PT100 in the warm chamber.
