ECO / TP / TFC / LTP — turbo expanders with oil brake for air separation units, up to 2000 kW, up to 150 000 Nm³/h
ECO, TP, TFC and LTP are turbo expanders with an oil brake for air separation units rated up to 2000 kW. By expanding compressed air or nitrogen, the machine produces the cold needed for cryogenic rectification. Flow rates across the series range from 13 000 to 150 000 Nm³/h.
- Purpose
- cold production in ASUs (nitrogen and oxygen production, nitrogen refrigeration cycles)
- Working media
- air, nitrogen, waste gas with a high oxygen content
- ECO 70 / 90 / 120
- up to 13 000 Nm³/h (5 kg/s), design pressure up to 16 bar, −196…+100 °C, up to 80 kW; >500 units in operation

Description
Air separation units (ASUs) split air at about −196 °C and deliver oxygen, nitrogen and argon, as well as neon, krypton and xenon. The expander produces the cold for this: compressed air or nitrogen expands in the turbine, and the brake absorbs the energy. The working media are air, nitrogen and waste gas with possibly high oxygen content. The manufacturer does not build the ASUs themselves but supplies expanders and process pumps for them.
ECO is a low-pressure expander, produced since 1983, with more than 500 machines in operation at the largest gas companies. Wheel diameters are 70, 90 and 120 mm, flow is up to 13 000 Nm³/h (5 kg/s), design pressure up to 16 bar, expander temperature from −196 to +100 °C, power up to 80 kW. The scope of supply includes an expander with a shear-type oil brake, a lubrication system, a quick-closing valve and an adapter plate for mounting to the customer's cold box.
TP has a brake oil pump and is designed for higher pressures, flows and powers. It has been produced since 1979, with more than 200 machines in operation. Sizes are TP 120, 200 and 300; flow is up to 100 000 Nm³/h (25 kg/s), pressure up to 100 bar, temperature from −270 to +200 °C, power up to 600 kW. It is supplied on a skid to reduce installation work, and the lubrication system can be built to API 614.
TFC combines an expander, a cryogenic booster compressor and an adjustable oil brake on one shaft; the brake is used to set a refrigeration capacity of up to ≈300 kW. There are five sizes, TFC 120–500, with flow up to 150 000 Nm³/h (50 kg/s), pressure up to 70 bar, design temperature −196 °C and expander power up to 2000 kW; more than 50 machines have been in operation since 1991. LTP is a liquid expander with an oil brake, and its cryogenic liquid turbine reduces ASU energy consumption by 1.5–5 %.
Common to all series: the cartridge design gives access to the rotor without removing the casing, a spare plug-in unit shortens the replacement of internal parts, the adjustable nozzle assembly maintains a wide range of flows and pressures, and a modular lubrication system supplies the brake and bearings.
