Description
Vertical reciprocating compressors complement the horizontal range where oil-free compression, compactness and minimal wear are required. The cylinders stand vertically, so the piston and rod do not load the guides with their own weight. For dry running this is useful: wear of the guiding elements is minimal. In labyrinth compressors the vertical arrangement gives precise centring of the piston and rod, without which the contactless labyrinth seal does not work. Versions are oil-free and lubricated, designed to API 618. If lubricant is unacceptable in downstream processes, an oil-free machine is chosen; if a contactless seal is important, a labyrinth one.
The range covers from 1 to 4 crank throws and from 1 to 8 compression stages. The final pressure reaches 1000 bar, power 6500 kW, capacity 50 000 Nm³/h. Rod loads, torsional vibrations of the shaft, pulsations and thermal behaviour are calculated in proprietary software. It takes into account the real behaviour of gas of any composition, allows stages and crank throws to be combined and multi-service machines to be designed.
The manufacturer has produced dry-running compressors for over 90 years, and the technology and strategy of the company have been oriented from the start towards fully oil-free compression. This is essential for hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, helium, high-purity gases and liquefied gases, where lubricant is unacceptable in downstream processes.
Typical applications are vertical compressors for pressure swing adsorption (PSA) plants that separate hydrogen from process gases. According to API 618 they work in the low-pressure range up to 40 bar at a power of about 2 MW. These machines also feed hydrogen into pipelines and for blending with natural gas. Marine vertical and V-type compressors, classified for ships, work on fuel gas and LNG boil-off gas (BOG) handling. There are versions for the chemical industry and the production of technical gases, as well as for systems with biomethane and synthetic fuels.
Like the whole range, these compressors undergo mechanical tests on the factory test stand and are supplied separately or as part of a complete plant. The service division carries out installation, commissioning, repair, supply of spare parts, rings and seals, and remote monitoring.

Questions and answers
Why is the vertical arrangement better for dry running?
The piston and rod do not load the guides with their weight, so wear is minimal. In labyrinth machines the vertical position gives the precise centring needed for the contactless seal.
What parameter range do the vertical compressors have?
From 1 to 4 crank throws and from 1 to 8 stages, final pressure up to 1000 bar, power up to 6500 kW, capacity up to 50 000 Nm³/h.
Are they suitable for hydrogen?
Yes, oil-free compression is required for hydrogen and high-purity gases. For PSA plants to API 618 such compressors work at a pressure of up to 40 bar and a power of about 2 MW.
