Description
V-type reciprocating compressors are the compact part of the range of process compressors for small and medium capacities. Two rows of cylinders stand at an angle, and first-order inertia forces are balanced completely. Only horizontal second-order forces remain. The compressor takes little space, gives a small load on the foundation and is easily placed in containers, on ships and on mobile platforms. The version is oil-free (dry running) or with lubricated cylinders. Such compactness is important where space is limited, for example in a container, on a ship deck or on a mobile platform.
The range covers 1 or 2 crank throws, from 1 to 4 stages, a final pressure of up to 400 bar, power up to 1000 kW and capacity up to 4000 Nm³/h. The machines are calculated in in-house software and built to API 618; some are made gas-tight for compression without emissions. Like the other machines of the range, they are calculated for the specific gas, pressure and capacity of the site.
An example from the gas industry is the mobile plant MoBIO 800. It has two dry gas-tight V-type reciprocating compressors driven by a 315 kW engine. The plant feeds purified biomethane into the existing gas network before a stationary one is introduced. Depending on the network, the compressors raise the gas pressure from 0–9 bar(g) to 84 bar(g), so the gas can be fed both into distribution gas pipelines and into high-pressure transmission networks.
Marine vertical and V-type compressors, classified for ships, work in fuel gas supply systems and LNG boil-off gas (BOG) handling, as well as in reliquefaction plants. On land V-compressors are installed in biomethane plants for feeding gas into the network, at technical gas treatment stations, in low-capacity hydrogen plants, in systems for collecting associated and flare gas and for CO2 compression.
Both individual compressors and fully equipped skid-mounted plants are supplied, with cooling, oil system, electric or gas engine, pulsation dampers, instrumentation and control cabinets. Service, spare parts and remote diagnostics are provided by the service division of the manufacturer.

Questions and answers
What parameters do the V-type compressors have?
Final pressure up to 400 bar, power up to 1000 kW, capacity up to 4000 Nm³/h, 1 or 2 crank throws and from 1 to 4 stages.
Why is the V arrangement suitable for containers and ships?
First-order inertia forces are balanced completely, only horizontal second-order forces remain. Therefore little space is needed and the load on the foundation is small.
What is the mobile plant MoBIO 800?
Two gas-tight dry-running V-type compressors with a 315 kW drive. They raise the pressure of biomethane from 0–9 to 84 bar(g) for feeding into the gas network.
