TG / MTG / LTG — turbo expander generators for gas pressure energy recovery (gas distribution stations) and LNG liquid expanders, up to 20 000 kW
TG, MTG and LTG are turbo expander generators rated from 75 to 20 000 kW that convert gas expansion energy into electricity. At gas distribution stations they replace throttling, since the gas expands in a turbine without burning fuel and without CO₂ emissions. The liquid LTG and LTP units operate in natural gas liquefaction plants.

Description
TG units are used for pressure energy recovery (Pressure to Power). Natural gas travels through trunk pipelines at high pressure but is delivered to consumers at moderate or low pressure, so at gas distribution stations electricity can be generated instead of throttling and fed into the grid. The unit also works in gas treatment (dew point control, ethane recovery, NGL and LPG, LNG production), in petrochemicals, in geothermal Kalina cycles and in organic Rankine cycles.
The unit consists of a cartridge-type expander, a quick-closing valve, a high-speed coupling, a gearbox, a low-speed coupling and a two- or four-pole generator. Gearboxes are epicyclic, parallel to API 613 or integral to API 617 part 3; direct drive is possible for low-speed machines. With a large pressure drop, one, two or four expansion stages are placed on one integral gearbox, each with its own casing, wheel and guide vane assembly. Generators are induction or synchronous, with protection and an automatic voltage regulator. The oil system is built to API 614, on the machine skid or separate; during coast-down a shaft-driven pump or an emergency tank supplies the oil. Adjustable nozzles maintain a wide range of flows and pressures.
The range covers nine sizes with power from 75 to 20 000 kW, flow up to 2.5 million Nm³/h, pressure up to 200 bar and temperature from −270 to +200 °C. The first TG was built in 1975, and more than 150 machines are in service. The MTG version has active magnetic bearings.
Liquid expanders LTG (with a generator) and LTP (with an oil pump brake) replace the Joule–Thomson valve in natural gas liquefaction plants, in the LNG or mixed refrigerant stream. They tolerate up to 20 % gas at the outlet and save from 1 to 3 % of the total plant power. Sizes are LTP70–90 and LTG70–600; they have been produced since 1986, with more than 60 machines in operation. Each machine undergoes factory mechanical and cryogenic tests. The manufacturer's service covers supervision of installation and commissioning, a 24-hour support line, service contracts, repair and personnel training.
