Description

Horizontal opposed (boxer) reciprocating compressors are the basis of the range of process compressors for hydrogen-containing and hydrocarbon gases. The manufacturer has designed and built reciprocating compressors since 1830. The machines are designed to API 618, as well as API 11P and ISO 13631, taking into account gases with corrosive and toxic components and high discharge pressure. Versions come with lubricated cylinders or dry running. The manufacturer has worked with dry-running compressors for over 90 years, and customers in the chemical and petrochemical industries note their durability.

The horizontal arrangement balances inertia forces, gives smooth running and low load on the foundation, and convenient access to the components shortens maintenance time. There can be 1, 2, 4, 6 or 8 crank throws and from 1 to 8 compression stages. The final pressure reaches 1000 bar, drive power 30 000 kW, capacity 100 000 Nm³/h. Some machines are made gas-tight so that compression takes place without emissions and leaks.

Each machine is calculated in in-house software: thermodynamics, valve checks, rod loads from inertia and gas forces, elastohydrodynamics of bearings, strength and torsional vibrations of the crankshaft, acoustic analysis of pulsations, monitoring of measured loads and p-V diagrams. The compressor leaves the factory with a quality certificate and undergoes mechanical tests on test stands in Übach-Palenberg and Wurzen. The customer can watch the five-hour test remotely on a digital test stand.

Typical applications in the gas industry are compressors for line stations of trunk gas pipelines with smooth capacity control systems and for injecting gas into salt caverns and porous storage facilities. At underground gas storage facilities the capacity reaches 200 000 Nm³/h, suction pressure 20–60 bar, discharge 80–230 bar, drive up to 10 MW. There are also compression of sour gas at treatment plants, hydrogen make-up compressors for hydrocracking (50–100 thousand Nm³/h, from 10–20 to 150–200 bar, over 10 MW), catalytic reforming compressors and CO2 compression.

Supply is possible as a single compressor or as a complete plant with cooling, oil system, motor, pulsation dampers and control cabinets.

Questions and answers

To which standards are horizontal opposed compressors designed?

To API 618, as well as API 11P and ISO 13631. They are designed for hydrogen-containing and hydrocarbon gases, including those with corrosive and toxic components.

What pressure and power does this range cover?

Final pressure up to 1000 bar, drive power up to 30 000 kW, capacity up to 100 000 Nm³/h. The number of stages is from 1 to 8.

Are oil-free versions available?

Yes, dry-running compressors work without cylinder lubrication. Lubricated versions are also available, and some machines are made gas-tight for compression without emissions and leaks.
