EmissionShield / ECP / ERS — methane emission prevention and recovery systems for reciprocating compressors

EmissionShield, ECP and ERS are three complementary systems for reducing fugitive methane emissions from reciprocating compressors. They seal the rod during standstill, route packing leakage to a nitrogen buffer and a vent line, and return the methane to the process. They are used at compressor stations, underground gas storage facilities, gas fields and gas processing plants.

EmissionShield
static self-activating rod seal for standstill under pressure; no external panel or gas supply; no moving parts; blowdown emissions reduced by 97 % (customer report)
ECP
nitrogen buffer panel between the seal and the distance piece; condition monitoring of the main and intermediate seals; no electrical components; ATEX zone 2; API 618
ERS
capture of methane from packing vent lines and dry gas seals, recompression into the process, tank or fuel gas line; installation in hazardous zone 2 / Class 1 Div. 2; PLC integration
Purpose
reduction of methane and CO2-equivalent emissions, gas recovery

Description

Reciprocating compressors are recognized as one of the main sources of fugitive methane emissions in the natural gas chain. Three systems that complement one another help to reduce them.

EmissionShield is a static rod sealing system for standstill periods. Conventional packings are designed to seal during operation, and when idle under pressure they let gas through. The gas from the cylinders, buffer vessels, heat exchangers and piping is either released or gradually vented, often simply to the atmosphere and not to a flare. EmissionShield activates itself, needs no external control panel or pressurized gas supply, has no moving parts and is not affected by contamination in the packing. Even if misapplied, it does not damage the other rings or the rod. The system suits any compressor, but gives the most benefit where the machine runs intermittently or stands by under pressure. According to a customer report (a power plant in Italy), the blowdown emissions of the compressor fell by 97 %, and the overall carbon footprint of the machine was reduced by 25 %.

ECP (Emissions Control Panels) create a nitrogen buffer between the main rod seal and the distance piece. All packing leakage goes into the vent line, and together with a flare system or recovery system greenhouse gas emissions are sharply reduced. Adjusting the purge pressure reduces nitrogen consumption. The panel monitors the condition of the main and intermediate seals, so maintenance can be condition-based and not schedule-based. The modular standardized panels operate autonomously, without electrical components, are registered under ATEX for zone 2 and comply with API 618.

ERS (Emissions Recovery System) captures methane from the packing vent lines, the primary vent lines of dry gas seals and other low-pressure sources. The gas is recompressed and returned to the process, a tank or the fuel gas line. The plug-and-play system needs almost no piping changes, tolerates unstable flows and pressure surges without emergency shutdowns and contains a minimum of wear parts. It is installed in hazardous zone 2 (Class 1 Div. 2) without changing the classification, with local or PLC control.

The systems are installed at compressor stations of gas pipelines and underground gas storage facilities, in gas fields and at gas processing plants where methane emission reduction requirements apply.

Questions and answers

How does EmissionShield reduce emissions while the compressor is idle?

The system activates itself at standstill under pressure and blocks leakage along the rod without an external panel or gas supply. According to a customer report, blowdown emissions fell by 97 %.

What standards and explosion protection class does the ECP panel have?

The panel is registered under ATEX for zone 2, complies with API 618 and contains no electrical components.

In what zone can the ERS system be installed?

In hazardous zone 2 (Class 1 Div. 2) without changing the classification. Control is local or from a PLC.
