PLUG, plug-in system for high-current connections 1–4.4 kV, 400–1250 A (wind turbines, rolling stock)

PLUG is a plug-in system from the manufacturer for high-current connections of electrical machines, power units, energy distribution systems and transport for AC voltage of 1–4.4 kV and currents of 400–1250 A. It is most often used to connect generators, converters and transformers of wind turbines and railway rolling stock.

Description

Plug-in connections in the range up to 4.4 kV increasingly replace conventional cable entries on electrical machines and power units. The manufacturer names three advantages: short installation time, a touch-safe design and a smaller occupied volume. PLUG reduces the connection of a generator, converter and transformer to one plug-in unit. A typical terminal box becomes unnecessary, the equipment becomes more compact, and the test interface that appears together with the PLUG socket is connected quickly.

The contact system is built on the line contact technology of the company with many contact points and high-quality contact materials. A wound spring keeps a high contact force throughout the whole service life, and high short-circuit resistance gives a margin during faults. The contact is protected from external influences and contamination, so its quality does not depend on the qualification of the installer. Structurally the system consists of a socket, a lower plastic housing, a seal, a contact, an upper plastic housing and a metal housing. The coding of the plugs excludes phase mix-ups, because each plug fits only its own socket, and the installation can be done by non-specialists.

The conductors connected are copper or aluminium, with a cross-section of 35–300 mm² of class 2 and 25–240 mm² of class 5. Covers close the sockets and plugs while maintaining dielectric strength and with a degree of protection of IP67. With them the equipment is partly put into operation during tests or maintenance and can be stored longer in the open air. The earthing set transfers the screen currents of shielded cables to the device housing, and the shielding set improves EMC and touch protection. The two-core connector 2-in-1 brings two cables to one contact. The cross-section is doubled without increasing the pulling force and bending radii, the number of plug connections decreases, and if necessary the line is passed through in transit.

In series production, PLUG equipment shortens the time of initial installation, and for generator and converter manufacturers this is a noticeable saving. In operation individual components are replaced in minimum time, so costly downtime can be avoided. The company, with over 100 years of experience in contact technology, advises on the choice of components, supplies ready-to-install tested cables and trains the customer's personnel in installing the system.
