Wind turbine generators: doubly-fed induction 100–5000 kW and permanent magnet synchronous (direct and semi-direct drive) up to 11.4 MW

This item combines generators of the company for wind power plants of three types. Doubly-fed induction generators (DFIG) cover 100–5000 kW at 400–690 V, and semi-direct drive permanent magnet synchronous generators come in a range of 60–11 400 kW. The third type, direct-drive synchronous generators, is presented in the catalogue without published parameters.

Description

A doubly-fed induction generator, or wound-rotor asynchronised generator, is fitted to wind turbines with a gearbox. The stator is connected to the grid directly, and the rotor is fed from a partial-rating frequency converter, so the converter is much smaller than the full rating of the machine. The range has 4–20 poles, shaft height 280–900 mm and a frequency of 50 or 60 Hz. Cooling is IC411, IC611 or IC81W. The generators are made to IEC for non-explosive areas.

Semi-direct drive permanent magnet synchronous generators work with a single-stage or two-stage gearbox at medium speed. The gearbox in such a scheme is shorter than in a classic one, and the generator is more compact than in a direct drive. As an example the manufacturer gives a 6.6 MW machine at 1140 V, current 3716 A, speed 686 rpm, power factor 0.9, with direct cooling.

Operating conditions of semi-direct drive PMSGs provide an ambient air temperature from −15 to +40 °C, average monthly humidity up to 90 % and installation altitude up to 1000 m. Direct-drive synchronous generators are fitted without a gearbox directly on the shaft of the wind rotor. The series is presented in the catalogue, but the manufacturer does not publish specific parameters on its site, so they are clarified on request. Permanent magnet generators work through a full-power frequency converter that matches the machine to grid code requirements. A full-power converter decouples the generator and the grid in frequency, so the speed of the wind rotor can vary within wide limits.

For wind power the group also produces yaw drive motors of 2.2 kW at 400/690 V, 50 Hz, 6 poles. Several such motors turn the nacelle to the wind direction. They work in short-time duty, so they are selected by torque and number of starts, not by continuous power.

The generators are intended for manufacturers of wind turbines and for replacing generators during repair of operating wind turbines. During replacement at an operating turbine the connection dimensions, stator voltage and converter type are checked, because a DFIG and a permanent magnet generator need different power electronics.

Questions and answers

What power do the doubly-fed induction generators have?

The DFIG range covers 100–5000 kW at 400–690 V with 4–20 poles. Frequency is 50 or 60 Hz, cooling IC411, IC611 or IC81W.

What parameters does the example semi-direct drive generator have?

The manufacturer gives a 6.6 MW machine at 1140 V with a current of 3716 A and a speed of 686 rpm. Power factor is 0.9, cooling is direct.

In what conditions do the permanent magnet generators operate?

At an ambient air temperature from −15 to +40 °C, average monthly humidity up to 90 % and at an altitude of up to 1000 m. The machine is connected to the grid through a full-power frequency converter.
