Description
Generators for wind power plants are built for power up to 8 MW for onshore and offshore wind farms. Series production of 1.5–7 MW wind generators began at the Dresden plant in 2007, and the thousandth wind generator was delivered by 2002. At that time the plant held a leading position in 1.5–5.4 MW doubly-fed generators. Each generator is designed together with the turbine manufacturer and adapted to the nacelle design and site conditions.
The power range is from 1.5 to 8 MW at voltages from 690 V to over 11 kV. The program includes wound-rotor induction generators (doubly-fed, DFIG) and squirrel-cage induction generators, electrically excited synchronous generators and NdFeB permanent-magnet synchronous generators (PMSG) in medium-speed and high-speed versions. PMSGs have no slip rings or brushes, so they need minimal maintenance. Their efficiency, including ventilation losses, exceeds 98 %. For converter operation the VEMoDUR-VPI-155 insulation system is used.
Examples of versions. PMSG 2.7 MW, 690 V, 110 Hz, 1650 rpm, efficiency over 98 %, shaft height 560 mm, IP54, IC616 air-to-air cooling. Wound-rotor induction generator 3.6–7 MW, 950 V – 10 kV, 50 Hz, 1200 rpm, efficiency 96.8 %, shaft 630 mm. Squirrel-cage induction generator 4.1 MW, 750 V, 1440 rpm, efficiency 97.6 %. Hybrid version 3.5 MW, 3300 V, 524 rpm, shaft 1000 mm, water cooling. Excited synchronous generator 3.7–7 MW, 800 V, 1362 rpm. Medium-speed PMSG 3.8 MW, 720 V, 375 rpm, efficiency 98.3 %, shaft 1120 mm.
The manufacturer also makes compact hybrid drives in which the generator and gearbox are combined in one unit. The program includes brake motors for yaw and blade pitch drives and low-voltage motors for the hydraulic, lubrication and cooling systems of turbines. The generators are made and tested to IEC/EN 60034, with TÜV, DNV-GL and UL/CSA certification. For offshore wind farms, corrosion-resistant versions and an extended temperature range are provided.

Questions and answers
What power and voltage range do wind turbine generators have?
1.5–8 MW at voltages from 690 V to over 11 kV. Versions exist for onshore and offshore wind farms.
Why do PMSGs need minimal maintenance?
They have no slip rings or brushes, because they are excited by NdFeB permanent magnets. Efficiency, including ventilation losses, exceeds 98 %.
To what standards are the generators made?
To IEC/EN 60034, with TÜV, DNV-GL and UL/CSA certification. For converter operation VEMoDUR-VPI-155 insulation is used.
