Water-cooled stator turbogenerator up to 2000 MVA
The manufacturer's water-cooled turbogenerators have the largest unit rating in the line, up to the 2000 MVA class. They are installed at nuclear power plant units and large thermal power plants. The rotor is cooled directly by hydrogen, and the stator winding bars by water flowing inside the conductors.

Description
This dual scheme gives the highest heat removal intensity among the three stator cooling schemes the manufacturer offers. Hence the maximum power density and high efficiency, up to 99.0 %. The rated voltage is up to 30 kV, the network frequency 50 or 60 Hz. The insulation has class 155 (F) with use according to class 130 (B). The two other schemes, air and hydrogen cooling, are used by the manufacturer at lower ratings.
Two-pole machines at 3000/3600 rpm are built up to the 1400 MVA class. Four-pole machines at 1500/1800 rpm are built up to the 2000 MVA class and are paired with the slow-speed turbines of nuclear power plants. It is the lower rotational speed of nuclear plant turbines that determines the choice of four poles. Unit rating grew together with improvements in cooling. The largest machines built are of the 1600 MVA class in the four-pole version (2000) and of the 1200 MVA class in the two-pole version (2012). Projects of a four-pole generator of the 2000 MVA class and a two-pole generator of the 1400 MVA class have now been completed.
At such ratings the end windings of the stator are subject to large forces, so their rigidity is increased by a special large resin support cone. The winding connections are made by high-quality vertical brazing. The tightness of the winding water circuit depends on the quality of brazed joints, so this unit receives special attention. For different markets a new series of water-cooled generators with radial ventilation has been developed, with higher efficiency, simpler maintenance and shorter delivery times.
The generator is supplied together with auxiliary systems, namely hydrogen and water cooling systems, an excitation system and a generator circuit breaker. For operation, partial discharge monitoring, remote online monitoring and the GenSPIDER robotic inspection are offered. Existing machines can be modernised with VP-X technologies to raise their rating. Modernisation covers new stator insulation, improved rotor ventilation, a higher-efficiency fan, a non-magnetic partition and bearings with direct lubrication.
From April 1, 2024 the generator business was transferred to a separate group company. After-delivery service relies on the network of service bases of the manufacturer and its plant engineering subsidiary in different countries.

Questions and answers
What rating do generators with water-cooled stators have?
Two-pole machines are built up to the 1400 MVA class, four-pole machines up to the 2000 MVA class. The largest machines built are of the 1600 MVA class (4 poles) and 1200 MVA class (2 poles).
What facilities are the four-pole generators intended for?
Four-pole machines at 1500 or 1800 rpm work with the slow-speed turbines of nuclear power plants. Two-pole versions run at 3000 or 3600 rpm.
What is supplied together with the generator?
Hydrogen and water cooling systems, an excitation system and a generator circuit breaker. Partial discharge monitoring and the GenSPIDER robotic inspection are offered separately.
