Description
The manufacturer's heat transfer and energy solutions division is among the leading global suppliers of coolers for hydrogen-cooled generators. A generator releases heat from conductor losses (I²R) and ventilation losses, and this heat must be continuously removed to the station's process water. An archive of drawings covering almost a hundred years allows a cooler of virtually any OEM to be replaced or repaired.
Hydrogen gas coolers are installed inside the generator casing and form part of the heat removal system. Warm gas from the stator and rotor passes through the coolers and gives up heat to fins and tubes. Air coolers remove heat from the generator's cooling air to water, exciter air coolers are installed on large hydrogen-cooled generators, and shell-and-tube oil coolers remove friction heat from rotating equipment.
On large machines a single gas is not enough to remove the conductor losses, so deionized water is pumped through the stator winding bars. Stator distillate coolers for such systems are made of non-ferrous metals in contact with the distillate, usually with smooth tubes and segmental baffles, and the shell is mostly stainless steel.
The units are designed to ASME Code Section VIII or outside the Code, and materials are selected for the environment. Fins are made of aluminum or copper, tubes of copper-nickel alloy, stainless steel or admiralty brass, and tubesheets and water boxes of carbon steel, CuNi, stainless steel, Muntz metal, naval brass or cast iron. Corrosion, erosion, fouling and water velocity in the tubes are considered in the calculation. Removable bolted covers simplify cleaning on the water side, and various nozzle orientations allow a new cooler to be installed without modifying the generator.
Hydrogen coolers have a service life of more than 25 years, some installations have operated for over 50 years, and stator distillate coolers for over 20 years. Regular cleaning of the tubes inside and out extends the life of the unit. For TEWAC motors and generators, coolers are supplied with removable covers and leak detectors on double tubes.
