Description
The TX-NLCH generator was developed from the two-pole TX-LCH machine for thermal power plants. Four poles are needed for the slow-speed turbines of nuclear plants, which rotate at 1,500 rpm in 50 Hz grids or 1,800 rpm in 60 Hz grids. The stator winding is cooled by water, while the rotor and stator core are cooled by hydrogen.
Stator voltage is up to 30 kV, power factor 0.85 or 0.9, efficiency up to 99.0% and rating up to 1,700 MVA. The generator is compatible with thyristor and brushless excitation, and for the brushless variant the exciter verification has already been successfully completed. The stator design is developed with numerical methods, namely stress analysis of the frame, CFD modeling of the cooling flows and magnetic flux analysis in the end zone.
Machines with thyristor excitation have been supplied to many nuclear plants in Japan and abroad. In 2012 the manufacturer shipped a 4P-60 Hz generator of 1,389 MVA (1,250 MW) for the Vogtle plant in the USA, and in 2013 a 4P-50 Hz generator of 1,690 MVA (1,521 MW) for the Barakah plant in the UAE. Both machines have entered commercial operation. The company has supplied the main equipment of the nuclear and turbine islands for over 20 nuclear plants in Japan and over 30 in the USA and Europe.
The generator is designed for nuclear units with BWR and PWR reactors rated 1,000-1,600 MW. It is also used to replace generators during nuclear plant life extension. The turbogenerators are built at the plant in Yokohama, and the stator winding bars are made there under a step-by-step quality control system. The generator is supplied together with a TX series steam turbine, including TX-10, the D-AVR digital excitation regulator and the D-EHC turbine control system.
