TX-ICH indirectly hydrogen-cooled turbogenerators up to 1,000 MVA

TX-ICH are two-pole turbogenerators for 50 or 60 Hz rated up to 1,000 MVA with indirect hydrogen cooling of the rotor and stator. The machines work with the gas and steam turbines of combined-cycle plants and in steam turbine units of thermal power plants.

Description

Hydrogen circulates inside the sealed generator casing and cools the rotor and the stator core. Heat from the stator winding bars is conducted through the insulation to the core, so the winding cooling is indirect. To make this heat path work at high ratings, the manufacturer developed a bar insulation system with increased thermal conductivity based on glass cloth, mica paper and epoxy compound. With it the stator is more compact than in water-cooled machines.

The generator needs no deionized water system for winding cooling. There is no water circuit with its pumps, filters and conductivity control, so operation is simpler and maintenance costs are lower. According to the manufacturer, indirect hydrogen cooling gives higher efficiency than water cooling, and the company develops precisely this machine type over a wide range of ratings. The machine is two-pole, for 50 or 60 Hz, with stator voltage up to 22 kV, power factor 0.85 and efficiency up to 99.1%.

TX-ICH generators work at combined-cycle power plants in the states of Indiana, Kentucky and North Carolina (USA), at the Noshiro plant of Tohoku Electric and the Nishi-Nagoya plant of JERA in Japan. Typical applications include generators for the gas and steam turbines of combined-cycle plants, steam turbine units of 200-1,000 MVA and replacement of generators at operating stations. For higher-rated units the manufacturer offers TX-LCH machines with water-cooled stator.

The turbogenerators are built at the plant in Yokohama, where the stator winding bars are also made under a step-by-step quality control system. The design is developed with numerical methods, namely stress analysis of the stator frame, CFD modeling of the cooling flows and magnetic flux calculation in the end zone. The generator is supplied together with a TX series steam turbine, the D-AVR digital excitation regulator and the D-EHC turbine control system.

Questions and answers

What are the rating and voltage of TX-ICH generators?

Rating up to 1,000 MVA, stator voltage up to 22 kV, power factor 0.85.

How does indirect hydrogen cooling differ from water cooling?

Hydrogen cools the rotor and the core, while heat from the stator bars is conducted through the insulation, so no deionized water system is needed. Efficiency reaches 99.1%.

Which stations is TX-ICH suitable for?

Combined-cycle and steam turbine power plants with units of 200-1,000 MVA, and for replacing generators at operating stations. Frequency 50 or 60 Hz.
