Description

Two-pole air-cooled turbogenerators are the manufacturer's main product for gas turbine and combined-cycle power plants, as well as for medium-output steam turbines. They are developed and manufactured in Weiz (Austria). Production there began in the 1950s, and the first machine dates from 1958. Since then more than 1,380 turbogenerators with a total output of over 147,000 MVA have been built for more than 75 countries.

The range covers 50–220 MVA, and in the current brochure the upper limit is 335 MVA. More than 850 air-cooled machines have been supplied. Since 1991 the manufacturer has cooperated with the world leader in gas turbine power plants as a partner in the joint development of two-pole generators. By the end of 2010, 722 machines with a total output of 83,000 MVA had been supplied under this cooperation. The total experience in this field is 991 turbogenerators with an aggregate output of 94,500 MVA (website data).

The technical data according to the brochure are as follows. Frequency 50/60 Hz, speed 3,000/3,600 rpm, voltage 10–19 kV. Cooling is TEWAC (closed air/water circuit), CACA (air/air) or open ventilation (OV). Excitation is brushless without a PMG pilot exciter, or static. The rotor is built so that the temperature is distributed evenly. The stator winding is a bar winding of transposed Roebel bars, which evens out heating and reduces losses. Insulation is the Micatec system with vacuum pressure impregnation (VPI).

The manufacturer also names operational advantages. Low initial costs come from standardized compact models. There are no complex auxiliary systems. Installation follows the plug and play principle, because the generator is supplied assembled. The machine is resistant to grid faults, responds flexibly to changes in grid conditions and can operate as a synchronous condenser. This mode is useful when a station needs to support grid voltage without delivering active power. Roebel bars even out the heating of the winding, which reduces losses.

As a reference, supplies include 1993 (160 MVA, 15.75 kV), 2002 (175 MVA, 15 kV) and 2008 (220 MVA, 15.75 kV, 3,000 rpm). Applications: gas turbine units, combined-cycle plants, steam turbine units and industrial power plants.
