Synchronous condenser 50-330 MVA with flywheel

Synchronous condensers rated from 50 to 330 MVA for 50 and 60 Hz grids stabilize power systems with a high share of renewables and HVDC. They provide reactive power, dynamic voltage support, short-circuit power and inertia. A modular flywheel raises the inertia constant up to 16 s.

Description

Synchronous condensers are synchronous machines that run without a prime mover and stabilize power systems with a high share of renewables and HVDC. They are installed at new or existing substations. The machine performs several functions at once: it generates and absorbs reactive power to regulate voltage in steady states, dynamically supports voltage with a short-term overload during faults, increases short-circuit power (up to five times rated current) and provides the natural inertia of rotating masses, which limits the rate of change of frequency (RoCoF).

The portfolio contains several series rated from 50 to 330 MVA for 50 and 60 Hz grids. Standardized cylindrical-rotor systems are designed for independent producers and developers of wind and solar plants who need a condenser to meet grid codes, and are distinguished by short delivery times. More powerful salient-pole machines are intended for transmission grids. Their inertia constant H exceeds 3.5 s, against 1.5-2.0 s for cylindrical rotors. A physical damper winding increases the synchronizing torque and the resistance to negative-sequence currents, and a static excitation system with negative excitation voltage extends the under-excitation range.

Cooling is air only, TEWAC or open, without hydrogen. Starting and synchronization are by a static frequency converter, without a pony motor. The manufacturer states that these are the largest air-cooled salient-pole condensers in the world. A modular flywheel made of standard disks needs no vacuum enclosure and raises inertia up to 16 s, for example for a 250 MVA machine from approximately 1 000 to 4 000 MW·s.

The deliveries listed include 2×330 MVA (18 kV, 60 Hz, 500 kV grid), 3×250 and 1×110 MVA (15.5 kV, 50 Hz, with flywheels), 4×120 MVA (12 kV, 50 Hz, 330 kV grid) and 165 MVA (11 kV, 60 Hz, 230 kV grid). The parameters of each installation are determined by transient stability calculations and mode analysis. The manufacturer has about 5 000 synchronous and asynchronous machines in operation.

Questions and answers

What range of ratings and frequencies do the condensers have?

Series rated from 50 to 330 MVA for 50 and 60 Hz grids. A cylindrical rotor is used in the standardized series for renewables, a salient-pole rotor in the more powerful machines.

What inertia does the flywheel provide?

The inertia constant H of salient-pole machines exceeds 3.5 s, and with a modular flywheel it grows to 16 s. For a 250 MVA machine this is approximately from 1 000 to 4 000 MW·s.

How is the condenser cooled and started?

Cooling is air only, TEWAC or open, without hydrogen. Starting and synchronization are by a static frequency converter, without a pony motor.
