Synchronous and induction generators for small hydropower plants 0.4–11 kV, 100–9000 kVA
The company's plant in Subotica (Serbia) produces hydro generators for small hydropower plants with Francis, Kaplan and Pelton turbines, in horizontal and vertical versions. The general-series synchronous machines have a rating of 132–9000 kVA for voltages from 0.4 to 11 kV. For plants operating in parallel with the grid, the plant offers induction and compact generators up to 5000 kW.

Description
This item covers the whole hydro generator line of the plant. General-series synchronous generators are made for 0.4 kV, 0.69 kV, 6 kV and 11 kV at 50 or 60 Hz, with 4 to 24 poles. Cooling is IC01, IC511 or IC611, degree of protection IP23 or IP55. Excitation is brush or brushless, and the choice depends on the plant's requirements for maintenance and regulation.
For small hydropower plants at low voltage of 400–690 V there are synchronous generators of 100–1500 kVA with shaft height 280–900. Separately, the plant keeps a standardised rating series of 550, 630, 800, 900, 1000, 1120, 1250, 1400, 1600, 1800 and 2000 kVA at 0.4 kV, 0.69 kV and 6 kV with shaft height 355–900. Such a series simplifies selecting a machine for a particular turbine without individual design. Shaft height is chosen for the rating and speed, and low-speed multipole machines turn out larger in size.
Induction hydro generators of 100–2000 kW at 400–690 V have from 4 to 20 poles and shaft height 280–900. They operate only in parallel with the grid, which supplies their magnetising current, so excitation and voltage regulator systems are not needed. For a small plant this means simpler equipment and lower costs for it. Compact generators of 100–5000 kW at 400–690 V (shaft height 355–710, cooling IC01 or IC611) are also designed for parallel operation with the grid.
All machines have class F insulation and mounting arrangements IM B3, B5 or V1, that is, horizontal foot-mounted, flanged and vertical. The generator is designed taking into account the turbine runaway speed and bearing loads, on which rotor strength and the choice of supports depend. For a machine hall with dry air, IP23 with IC01 cooling is usually sufficient, while IP55 with IC511 or IC611 is used where the air is humid or dusty.
The generators are suitable for new construction of small hydropower plants and for replacing worn machines at operating plants, where the turbine stays and the generator is changed. During such a replacement the turbine speed, shaft direction and the voltage of the connection grid are checked.

Questions and answers
Which turbines do the hydro generators work with?
With Francis, Kaplan and Pelton turbines in horizontal and vertical versions. Mounting IM B3, B5 or V1.
What are the rating and voltage of the synchronous generators?
The general series covers 132–9000 kVA at 0.4 kV, 0.69 kV, 6 kV and 11 kV at 50 or 60 Hz. For low voltage of 400–690 V there are machines of 100–1500 kVA.
When is an induction hydro generator appropriate?
When the plant operates in parallel with the grid, an induction machine of 100–2000 kW needs no excitation system or regulator. It is built for 400–690 V with 4–20 poles.
