Description

The line of synchronous generators was created specifically for small hydropower plants. Unlike general-industrial generators adapted for hydropower, these machines are designed from the outset for the increased electrical, mechanical and thermal loads of hydropower. These are load rejection, runaway, out-of-phase synchronisation, short circuits and a large temperature difference between the cold turbine and the hot generator.

Voltage from 690 V to 13.8 kV, frequency 50 or 60 Hz. The standard range of application per the manufacturer's charts is roughly up to 35 MVA for vertical and up to 30 MVA for horizontal machines. The number of poles is from 6 to 36, which corresponds to synchronous speeds from 1000 to 167 rpm at 50 Hz and from 1200 to 200 rpm at 60 Hz. Degree of protection from IP23 to IP54 per IEC 60034-5, cooling methods from IC 01 to IC 81W per IEC 60034-7. Class F insulation used to class B, ambient temperature −10…+40 °C, up to +60 °C on request.

In the stator, reinforced winding end parts withstand short circuits and out-of-phase synchronisation. The magnetic core is rigidly consolidated, with radial ventilation ducts. Bonding and a two-component epoxy resin with VPI impregnation are used, and the coils undergo 100 % testing. The rotor has single-layer pole coils for better cooling and mechanical rigidity. A laminated solid rim and poles are used for low-speed and high-speed versions, and a solid salient-pole rotor gives minimum vibration. Mechanical damping is built in at the design stage rather than added as extra elements on the shaft line.

Bearings with flanged or pedestal liners, rolling bearings optionally. Excitation is provided by a brushless exciter or a static one. The generators work both with the manufacturer's excitation systems and with purchased equipment.

All horizontal and vertical machines undergo full tests per IEC 60034-1 and 60034-2, including temperature rise in no-load and short-circuit conditions and an overspeed test. The generators meet the requirements of current grid codes for fault ride-through. Application: small hydropower plants with Pelton, Francis and Kaplan turbines.
