Description
Hydro generators are synchronous machines for small and medium hydropower plants rated 0.3 to 20 MW. According to the manufacturer, the installed capacity of its hydro generators worldwide exceeds 5 GW, its experience in this field is more than 50 years, and over 750 projects have been completed in the last 20 years. The generators are built at a plant in Orléans (France) certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. The plant uses CNC plasma and laser cutting, form-wound coil manufacturing and vacuum pressure impregnation.
The generators are adapted to most turbine types (Francis, Pelton, Kaplan and others) with particular attention to critical speeds. An overhung runner on an extended shaft end, taking the turbine loads, is possible. Rigid mechanical assembly with dynamic balancing to grade G1 (ISO 1940-1) gives low vibration in all operating modes, and the compact design reduces foundation costs. Machines are designed with finite element calculations and in 3D CAD, jointly with the turbine manufacturer if required.
Voltage is 400–15 000 V, rotational speed 300–1500 rpm at 50 Hz and 360–1800 rpm at 60 Hz. The design is vertical (IM 3011) or horizontal. Cooling is IC01, IC21, IC31 or IC81W per IEC 60034-6. Insulation is class H, including for MV and HV, with temperature rise to class F or B. Excitation is self-excited with a brushless rotating exciter system, and regulators are analogue or digital.
Options include speed sensors, rotor earth fault monitoring, a brake, oil level monitoring, vibration monitoring equipment, a high-pressure shaft jacking system, water leakage monitoring, a flywheel, a shaft for a lubrication pump, a terminal box for RTDs, VTs, surge arresters and partial discharge sensors, and equipment for turning the rotor on site. For refurbishment, a digital static excitation system is offered.
Example: the Frédet-Bergès hydropower plant (France), 3.5 MW, 750 rpm. According to the description of this project, the generator is 8-pole, with sleeve bearings, vertical, with closed-circuit water cooling through a two-tube air-water heat exchanger (IC81W), insulation class H and temperature rise class B. Efficiency is 96.7 % at full load and cos φ 0.9, and maximum output is 4.5 MW at 750 rpm.

Questions and answers
What power and voltage range do the hydro generators cover?
Power is 0.3 to 20 MW and voltage is 400–15 000 V. Rotational speed is 300–1500 rpm at 50 Hz and 360–1800 rpm at 60 Hz.
Which cooling systems and insulation classes are available?
Cooling is to IEC 60034-6 as IC01, IC21, IC31 or IC81W. Insulation is class H, including for MV and HV, with temperature rise to class F or B.
Which turbines do these generators work with?
The generators are adapted to Francis, Pelton, Kaplan and other turbines, in vertical (IM 3011) or horizontal design. For an overhung runner the shaft is extended, and balancing is done to grade G1.
