Description

Short-circuit test generators are special synchronous machines for test centres. They are used to check circuit breakers, transformers and other equipment for withstand of short-circuit currents and breaking capacity. The generator works in short cycles, during which a powerful short-circuit current is applied to the apparatus under test.

The principle of operation of such a test bench is simple: the rotor is accelerated to operating speed, and then the energy stored in the rotating mass is briefly released to the stator windings. In this way the test centre obtains on the bench a current and power that cannot be taken from the supply grid without overloading it. To select a generator, the short-circuit power required by the test programme, the rated frequency, the voltage and the cycle duration are checked. The values of these quantities for a specific machine are not given in the available materials, so they must be requested from the manufacturer together with the list of apparatus to be tested and the required test currents and voltages.

According to the website of the company, short-circuit test generators of 135 to 6500 MVA are produced. The versions include 6500 MVA and 4500 MVA machines, the latter for 100 Hz. More than 30 such generators have been supplied to 13 testing organisations in China.

The same product group includes impulse generators, including a large vertical 300 MVA impulse generator for scientific and test installations. Design parameters, including voltage, rotational speed, excitation system and dimensions, are not given in the available materials and are clarified with the manufacturer.
