SGen-3000W is a series of large two-pole turbo generators of 540–1300 MVA for steam and gas power plants. The stator winding is water-cooled, and the rotor and active steel are hydrogen-cooled. The series completes the modular SGen line and can work with turbines from other manufacturers.

Description
SGen-3000W occupies the top step of the SGen line, where the rating already requires hydrogen cooling. The building-block concept is kept, and the generator shares many components and units with other machines in the portfolio, so spare parts are easier to find. The stator core is assembled in the same way as in the manufacturer's other generators. SGen5-3000W for 50 Hz delivers up to 1300 MVA at a power factor of 0.8 and a stator voltage up to 27 kV, with a weight of up to 425 t. SGen6-3000W for 60 Hz is rated for the same 1300 MVA at 0.85 and up to 26 kV, with a weight of up to 390 t. Efficiency reaches 99 %, and the MICALASTIC® insulation is class F.
The stator winding bars have hollow stainless steel conductors for water cooling. The water in the closed loop does not contact copper, so the loop is not very sensitive to water chemistry. Ventilation is by a single-stage axisymmetric fan, and the rotor and stator are cooled radially. Gas coolers are built into the casing and are easy to reach during maintenance. The shaft seals are of the gland type, low-maintenance and proven in service. Access to the generator for inspection and service is provided without complicated dismantling, and environmental requirements and individual customer conditions are taken into account at the design stage.
The rotor withstands 10 000 start-stop cycles over its service life without withdrawal. Foundation loads are about 15 % lower, and vibration corresponds to zone A under ISO. The design permits high load ramp-up and ramp-down rates and frequent starts at low thermomechanical stress in the stator winding, so the machine copes well in a grid with an uneven load profile. The generator arrives on site with the rotor and coolers installed. The scope includes an attached static excitation system, automated auxiliary systems with redundancy and digital condition monitoring packages.
The generator is installed in large steam power units, including those with a steam tailing scheme, in simple- and combined-cycle gas turbine power plants in peak, intermediate and base load duty, and in cogeneration facilities. An example is the Fortuna unit in Düsseldorf, where an SGen5-3000W of 608 MVA, 21 kV, 50 Hz works in the SCC5-8000H combined-cycle plant with an efficiency of about 61.5 %.
