Description
The manufacturer has been developing reversible hydro units for pumped storage power plants since the 1960s and, by its own data, holds the largest share of the pumped storage equipment market in China. The units are made by the subsidiary of the group in Harbin. The range covers a full set of heads, rotational speeds and outputs of single-stage reversible machines, including a runner diameter of up to 6 m and a rotational speed of 100 to 750 rpm.
According to the group, it took part in building 40 pumped storage plants and 147 units. The website of the subsidiary gives wider figures: up to 303 units for 76 stations, and a maximum output of 425 MW, the largest in China. The projects include the first domestically built large pumped storage unit at Xiangshuijian, four 375 MW units at Xianju commissioned within one year, and six units at Liyang with the widest head variation range in China.
The Fengning pumped storage plant, described as the largest energy storage facility in the world, supplied green power to the 2022 Winter Olympic Games. At Huanggou a winding with a fractional pole ratio was used for the first time. The Tiantai plant has the highest design head in the world, 724 m, and the largest unit output in China. There are also the hybrid Lianghekou plant and Tai'an II, the first project in China to introduce the core technologies of variable-speed units.
In 2025 the company won the tender for four 250 MW pump-turbines for the Upper Stung Tatai plant (Cambodia), the first entry of Chinese pumped storage equipment into the international market. The company positions itself as a major supplier of clean energy equipment and is developing a new generation of units with full ranges of heads, rotational speeds and outputs. Further development relies on the concept of high, low, wide, large and variable: heads above 800 m, low-head high-altitude units (below 300 and even 100 m), a wide range of heads and loads, unit output above 400 MW, runner diameter above 5–6 m, and variable speed with AC excitation over the whole output range.

Questions and answers
What is the unit output of the reversible pumped storage units?
From 50 to 425 MW. Heads cover the range from 50 to 800 m, and the runner diameter reaches 6 m.
What rotational speeds and heads does the range cover?
Rotational speeds from 100 to 750 rpm and heads from 50 to 800 m. A design head of 724 m has been reached at the Tiantai plant.
Are variable-speed units manufactured?
Yes, Tai'an II became the first project in China with the core variable-speed technologies. The development concept envisages AC excitation over the whole output range.
