Description
Reversible hydro units for pumped-storage power plants are one of the main lines of the enterprise, which was founded in Deyang in 1958. The unit consists of a pump-turbine and a synchronous motor-generator machine. In generating mode it produces energy, and in motoring mode it pumps water into the upper reservoir. In this way the plant stores energy in the upper reservoir and returns it to the network when needed. The unit is selected for the head and power of the specific plant. According to the manufacturer, such units are designed and built for heads from 50 to 850 m and a unit power from 10 to 450 MW. The general list also gives a range of 40–375 MW.
The first domestic 300 MW pumped-storage unit was made for the Xianyou plant, where 4 units were commissioned in 2013. Then came the Shenzhen plant (4×300 MW, 2018), Xianju and Jixi (2019), Changlongshan (4×350 MW, 2022), as well as Fengning-II, Fukang, Wuyue, Pankou and Hami (4×300 MW, rated head 474 m). The Changlongshan units have the second highest head in the world and the highest among pumped-storage units in China. Contracts have been received for 60 units, so the line covers the whole head range. The head range from 50 to 850 m covers both low-head and high-head plants.
For variable-speed units, a technology based on a doubly-fed asynchronous machine with AC excitation is being developed. A full-scale AC excitation current collection system for a 300 MW class motor-generator has been tested successfully. For such modes the motor-generator is asynchronised, that is, the rotor is fed with alternating current. The results were obtained at the Zhaoqing and Tai’an-II plants. Variable rotational speed makes it possible to regulate power in pumping mode and raises efficiency when the head changes.
The concept of “new generation” units with higher reliability, flexibility and digital functions is being developed. At the Yongtai plant, an intelligent diagnostic system and a CAVE repair simulator have been introduced. The enterprise has a national hydraulic laboratory, test benches for model testing and its own calculation and design centre. Manufacturing is carried out in Deyang (Sichuan, China).

Questions and answers
What power and head do reversible units have?
Unit power from 10 to 450 MW, head from 50 to 850 m. The general list also gives a range of 40–375 MW.
Which pumped-storage plants are equipped with such units?
Xianyou (4 units of 300 MW, commissioned in 2013), Shenzhen (4×300 MW, 2018), Changlongshan (4×350 MW, 2022) and Hami (4×300 MW, head 474 m).
Are there variable-speed units?
Yes, the technology is being developed on the basis of a doubly-fed asynchronous machine with AC excitation. A current collection system for a 300 MW class motor-generator has been tested, and results were obtained at the Zhaoqing and Tai’an-II plants.
